The ashes (Ash Wednesday) is a representation of the verse, "Remember, man, you are dust and to dust you will return."-Genesis 3:19 A reminder of our mortality. We are but subjects of God and His greater design, and we are easily broken down, as easily as we were made.Lent, is a practice to humble oneself as Christ wandered in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights (funny movie, rated R), where He was tempted by the devil with food, glory, and kingdom (Matthew 4: 1-11). Basic wants of any man, and Christ being whole man & God, the devil tried the whole man and failed.Mardi Gras (français en 'Fat Tuesday) is a time where we Catholics spend time with family and friends, over merriment, food, games, etc, in preparations of 40 days of penance, fasting, and prayer. Catholics are encouraged to detach themselves from materials wants (luxury, frivolous spending, and gluttonous acts), and replace them with Christ-like acts (charity, humility, and fasting).Retaining the ashes is not a symbol of "look at me" per say, but "I am here" and "you're not alone". Remember that for the first 300-400 years of the Christian faith (now Catholics) people were persecuted, executed, taunted, ostracized, and shunned. The ashes, like the Jews of Moses' time identified their homes for the Holy Spirit with lamb's blood, identify ourselves to the world of our faith to Christ King, but to one another as fellow brothers and sisters.Hope this helps.
