'Braxton, who is Black, decided to go to the town hall and talk to Stokes, who is white, in person. He told Stokes that he would need a key to the town hall to begin his duties. Stokes acquiesced and gave him a key, but when Braxton entered the building, he found that town hall had been stripped of its records, beyond a couple boxes of discarded items that looked like trash. He also said he noticed that Stokes had given keys to friends of his, people who were not council members and had no official business with the city, who were walking in and out of the building.'https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/aug/26/black-mayor-alabama-town-locked-out

"My cohort was the most diverse in the history of my program, yet many faculty members weren’t used to being around people from various backgrounds. I received many comments questioning my place in the program, my future in science given that no one in my family has a PhD, and my legal status in the country."https://elifesciences.org/articles/92403

'Following Joseph Lister, German surgeons, unlike their French colleagues, used carbolic acid spray to sterilise their tools and operating areas. French surgeons did insist on ‘hygiene’, but by this they meant the provision of adequate bedding and the maintenance of medical supplies, not sterilisation. Death rates for amputations on the French side reached 75 per cent (including toes and fingers) – a shocking figure, given that by 1870 the use of Lister’s techniques in peacetime amputations had resulted in a drop from 50 per cent to 15 per cent.' https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v45/n18/christopher-clark/predicamental

Evolution strikes again"One of the most uncommon hinges of vertebrate Ig is that exclusively found in Antarctic fishes: IgM H chain has a remarkably long hinge region, ranging from 14 to 22 amino acid residues, highly polymorphic, and rich in prolines and glycines (Coscia et al, 2000; Coscia et al, 2011; Coscia et al, 2012). Given these peculiar features, the hinge region has been suggested to provide the cold Ig molecule with higher flexibility to exert its function at very low kinetic energy in the Antarctic environment."#Preprint #Immunologyhttps://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2023.10.04.560855v1.full.pdf

@josemanuel What you’re missing is the focus of the piece: the lack of data sharing and credit for the communities where the data was mined.

@josemanuel A more predatory aspect in mining genetic/population data in the developing world & then enmeshing it in patents & other forms of IP protection. In which case there is no sharing at all, it’s just strip mining genetic resources.

'Another implication of their study is that our ancestors enjoyed a malaria-free existence right up until the neolithic transition 10,000 years ago when, coincident with the shift from nomadic to agrarian lifestyles, Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite responsible for the deadliest form of human malaria, mutated to target Neu5Ac so abundantly present on human cells. It is thought that our more agricultural lifestyle made humans more vulnerable to the malaria-carrying mosquitoes that bred in stagnant pools near settlements.'https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/dec/10/sugar-coating-cells-illness-pathogens-evolutions-glycans-sialic-acids

Though his character, Tuttle, is a relatively small part, he’s the hero really, as he’s the only person who’s achieving anything. I said to him: “You’re a plumber, but I want you to treat the plumbing like it’s brain surgery.” He actually found a New York neurosurgeon and sat in on an operation as part of his preparation, though when you see Tuttle handling equipment in closeup, those hands are mine."https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2023/dec/11/robert-de-niro-terry-gilliam-jonathan-pryce-brazil-plumber-python

The depositions begin at least as early as four or five weeks into gestation.
