When Taylor Swift’s albums got acquired to make billions of dollars for a company, she didn’t roll over and go, welp, guess I gotta stick with this shitty exploitative system. She re-recorded and released everything under her own copyright so she gets all the royalties! In the same way, we have to rebuild our spaces that got acquired so that we own them ourselves. Our data. Our governance. Not extractive systems that feed their growth. *That’s* the promise of the fediverse.

@Wolven We have been explaining this repeatedly for years. Like voices in the wilderness. While I'm glad they are finally listening this is so exhausting to go through this over and over again. If only that would translate into action like mass exodus from their toxic tools too. Because there is no separation.

@futurebird As I see it, the competitive walls between these companies is an opportunity for ensuring my data doesn’t move between them. I am happy these apps don’t “work” across their boundaries, as I can use that Balkanization strategically.Data brokerage has highly consolidated and shifted since it started in the early ‘teens—it’s just meta and Google now. The stuff at the seams, they know, but those biggest companies have a stranglehold on their own data.

@Mer__edith Seventy years of building up a military-industrial complex, decades of government investment in AI expressly for military purposes since the very beginning of cybernetics. I admire the few people at Google who think they can take it down in this instance, and I find it amusing that a lot of good hearted souls literally drank the tech Koolaid and thought that wasn’t what they were in tech for. But they have some serious history homework to do to even know the beast they are fighting.

@futurebird We think this is funny but I do know someone who was studying evangelicals doing bible study and interpretation of texts, and now they do it with trump’s speeches, because the speeches are like speaking in tongues, like Revelations or something, and these Bible study groups are like what does he even MEAN?!? and treat it like exegesis. Not even ironically. Earnestly.
