@mjg59 recently our CFO came to me because «Internet was no longer working» on his laptop, and indeed Windows showed no wireless connection; I went through all the usual driver stuff, but the card was completely missing. Finally, I opened the thing, removed and reinstalled the card (cleaning the contacts with my shirt/blowing in the slot just for good luck) and indeed it worked ever since. Yeah sometimes (but rarely) software is not at fault.

@daniel @Steveg58 @mike I'm not really sure it has much to do with batteries, looking at https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Power_Connector#barrel_connector.2C_slim (and around) and correlating it with https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Batteries#Nicd I see many NiCd/NiMh models with 19/20 V adapters.

@0xC01DC0FFEE my coworkers who work with TI DSPs with 16 bit bytes keep complaining about it, the one time I worked on that firmware I was delighted at this extra 8 bit gift, went all "this is free real estate" and doubled the resolution of the input signal receive buffer at no memory cost.

@m0xee @guenther @atom HTML GUI in Explorer with links even to external stuff is much older than that, it started with IE4 in Windows 95 that gave a complete overhaul to the Explorer/desktop UI, making it much more similar to what would have been Windows 98. See also the whole Active Desktop stuff.

@foone still better than Google Maps that just resets you to the default map view when switching account, especially infuriating given that you can get the fancy behavior (switch account and keep the same view) just manually changing the &authuser= parameter in the URL.

@ljrk @mjg59 > If Mozilla finally revokes a certificate we cheer on them, even if this breaks some websites.I don't think the comparison is fair, though... a broken SSL certificate can be worked around easily if you really need to access that website; breaking the boot bricks the entire machine (there's no "continue anyway" button), and is an order of magnitude more complex to fix for the user. Also, an update of an OS breaking the other is not something you expect.

@mjg59 @ljrk mm more like "this site uses an obsolete TLS protocol/cyphersuite, that has known vulnerabilities"

@foone I may be biased, but cvttsd2si would (begrudgingly) be my choice. It's the wrong operation (generally one would actually want cvtsd2si, i.e. conversion with rounding), but before it all double -> int casts in C required a tortuous instructions sequence fucking up and then restoring the FP control word.
