@jeffcliff It's like a 10% tax on using your cellphone while eating, except you slap the 10% on the prices and then make it look like a discount instead. This strat helps with a lot of things.

My mind is stuck on a dilemma which actually happens more often than some clickbait site kludges together an article for it.Suppose you’re working 40hr/wk in a highly repetitive job and you manage to write a program to automate your job so you only need to work 1hr/weekday (5hr/wk). Do you let anyone know about this?Consider what happens if you do. (These are about as accurate as comments made on Reddit. Specifically, those that talk about personal experiences or friends’ experiences, which are better than the “I heard this story about” comments.)Sometimes you get promoted. Sometimes your coworkers get made redundant. Sometimes your entire department gets made redundant. This isn’t a particularly nice outcome, although one reported that it worked out well for them and wasn’t all gloom and doom. But sometimes your manager insists that you slow down so not to make everyone else look bad, even if you offer to help all of your coworkers use your program. What happens when you don’t tends to involve you having a really nice time for the next however long it lasts and then you put yourself at risk of stagnating yourself to uselessness like that guy who did this for 6 years and then basically forgot how to code by that point. There are people in comment threads on this topic where they basically say “I would fire you for being such a dishonest scumbag, you are truly the lowest of the low and you are stealing from the company”. Some of these people have a point, while some of these people really need to admit their incompetence and go flip some burgers instead of jerking it in the boardroom. The two concerns are ultimately this:If a company is willing to pay you $15/hr for 40hr/wk to do data entry for them, that’s $600/wk. If it takes you only 5hr/wk to do the work, will they be a bunch of cheapskates and give you only $75/wk?If you let them have it, who gets sacked?I’ll say that if you get sacked, the company’s run by a bunch of beyond-braindead morons who couldn’t even spot potential in an already and thus will probably die out in the next 10 years. (I suspect it’s more like 3, but companies are really slow when it comes to hurrying the fuck up and dying already.)If I found myself in this situation I’d be tempted to teach everyone on the team how to automate their stuff. Heck, I think that moving everyone from $15/hr 40hr/wk of data entry to $30/hr 20hr/wk of less data entry and more making sure stuff was automated well would actually be a win-win - sure, you don’t get paid more, but everyone gets to have a life. But in all this there’s definitely an issue of trust. If you’re in a company where nobody can trust anybody, well, you can be polite and try to restore trust for a bit, but if that comes across as hopeless then you might as well learn enough LaTeX to make a nice, easily-tweakable CV…

Hearing about the fancy new hospital China set up reminded me of that one scene from the second Kingsman movie and then I read that apparently they’re doing something like that but it doesn’t involve a crane:https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/3870468

@cereal I love how so many of these end up with the caption cropped off so you can have a laugh without immediately getting slapped by someone's take on the image.

@shpuld Hmm, good point.I'm hoping the next gimmick they go hard out on isn't going to be "gripping plot".Also, one of these days I should probably learn how to prop-fly in HL2. I really do appreciate that kind of realism.

@hunter I'd be surprised if looking up a method on an object just so you can do a pointer comparison were sensible.Regardless I'm in favour of having both as core parts of any language. If one were to do value comparison against a pile of 1MB strings a whole bunch of times, things would get somewhat ridiculous, so it makes sense to some extent to have it available.Python uses the `is` operator for pointer comparison. If you want a good example on how to do equality at the very least, Python is a good example. (As for what it treats as true or false, Python is a bad example.)
