@MASTERBOOTRECORD See if you can get in touch with the competitive "Super Smash Bros Melee" community. They tend to hoard CRTs for their competitions.

An interesting point raised at the panel about Slavic folklore in fantasy - Slavs are too white to be culturally appropriated so people feel they can do what they want.

@EU_Commission Any particular reason why the firm "Agree" and "Disagree" are illustrated with men, and the "Don't know" with a woman?

@bonno @arstechnica Linux doesn't have most of the games I like to play. Linux doesn't have some applications I need (because I wrote them years ago in Delphi, or in C# using classes not available in .Net Core).I use many FOSS applications, have released code under BSD license, and have Ubuntu as my work O/S, so I am sympathetic. But telling people who complain about Windows that they should just install your favourite flavour of Linux is at best misguided, and makes you look like a berk.

At tonight's #longsword lesson we looked at attacks from ox, unicorn, and hanging guards, with some of Meyer's funkier footwork. I can already tell I will ache in new and interesting places tomorrow. Also, today I took the car to training, since I had to be in the office to test my software on some hardware I don't have at home (it works!). With all the training gear as well as the laptop, it was just easier to drive than to take public transport. But I prefer to take the bike and train.

@vitalis We're following Meyer rather than Fiore, so I'm not familiar with the Italian names. If I'm not thinking of any particular approach, I tend to move between "pflug" (plow) or "vom tag" (high guard) when out of distance.

@vitalis I've only been doing longsword for a few years, after 20+ years of unarmoured sword&shield. Still getting used to the idea of striking towards the head, or not massively pulling your blows. :-)

So, an #introduction post.Bio says "Swordsman, storyteller, engineer".⚔️ - I've been doing stage/display/reenactment combat for ~30 years, mainly Viking Age and medieval. Started doing HEMA last year (longsword). Tend to lose count of how many swords I have.🖋️ - I write fiction, mostly very, very short SF/F which I post at various social media sites under the name MicroSFF. Known to occasionally commit poetry.🧑‍💻 - I write software, mainly C/C++ for embedded use, with some C# and Python..

At tonight's #longsword class, we had a substitute teacher, who used fewer sound effects, and less swearing. We continued with the sequences, which were building on the tempo breaking we did a few weeks ago. We even did a few sequences from the zornhut position (see image). So far this term I find the intermediate class less physically demanding than the beginner's class was, but much more technically and intellectually challenging. I'm having lots of fun.

During lunch today the son-out-law got the honour of disposing of the #halloween pumpkin, using a #longsword. The first cut went straight through without the top half moving at all - he had to go and lift it up to confirm he had in fact cleaved it in half.Quite impeccable edge alignment on his first try ever.

@vitalis It's a basic Hanwei longsword, which I bought a few years before I started learning how to use one. I also have a sharp bronze sword, which I made myself. The mould that was cast in was based on a find that now is in Dublin museum. My other swords are blunt, for HEMA or reenactment use.

@vitalis I have a Regenyei Armory feder, a Hanwei basket-hilt rapier, a Paul Binns Norman arming sword, an Armour Class Viking sword, a Sverdfadir langseax, and another langseax I don't know the maker of. Also a couple of bearded axes, three spears with hafts of varying lengths and heads of varying sizes, and a few seaxes. All blunt for reenactment combat. The Paul Binns sword I also use for sword&buckler, as it's light and springy enough. The Binns Saxon sword in the image is my partner's

@vitalis My club has a class in jogo do pau, which I might join at some point. I have trained in two-handed Dane axe - enough to be safe doing unchoreographed combat displays against unarmoured opponents - which have many similar area-clearing techniques. There are of course no manuals in Dane axe use, so what my reenactment society taught was a mix of what works intuitively, what looks cool, and, more lately, inspiration from pollaxe manuals.

@clacke Best enjoyed with bearnaise sauce to add some tartness to the sweetness from the banana, the saltines from the ham, and the umami from the curry powder.(Plus you get to offend the French as well.)
