@stux there's tons of different kinds of AI, so it really depends. Like AI to play chess against? Yes please. AI for portrait mode photos? I like it. AI to replace my search engine? Absolutely not. There's a lot of AI already present on people's phones that they don't really think about that is genuinely useful and not harmful. It just depends on what kind of AI you're talking about and how it's being used.

@frameworkcomputer I'm a software engineer and still don't quite understand what this means. Can someone explain what's happening from a normal user perspective? What are the implications of suspend vs hibernate vs suspend then hibernate?I'm assuming this should result in battery life improvement?

@matthartley @khleedril @frameworkcomputer That was a perfect explanation, thank you. Oh! So this makes it suspend for say 20 minutes then hibernates if that time is exceeded? To get the best of both worlds when closing the laptop?

@futurebird check out the Harvard CS50 class. Obviously the course is too advanced for 5th grade, but it comes with free access to vscode in the browser with a virtual environment for the terminal. Hope that helps and good luck. - high school CS teacher (would love to connect more)

@BrodieOnLinux every time I hear about making lists (usually in the context of Linux or web standards) I think "hmm i wonder what that is. Probably some weird kind of communication. I wonder how that works"I'm pretty sure it's based on email which I've just never really understood, so I hope I never need to participate in a mailing list

@stux in California at least, brick buildings are not allowed to be built because of earthquakes. Any brick buildings you see are either really old or more likely, it's just a brick facade

@futurebird i think the bad attitudes towards algorithms is basically the same as towards AI. There are good and beneficial uses of certain kinds of AI that have nothing to do with generative LLMs, but because media and everyone else is just calling everything AI, it's easier to just say you're anti-AILikewise, algorithms can be good and useful, but because people's main exposure to the concept is manipulative social media algos they can't control, it's easier to just say you're anti-algorithm

@futurebird I've been thinking about (and worked on) setting up a mastodon server for just my students to post and respond to each other about their projects. I really like the idea of teaching them how to use social media responsibly and respectfully. But it would just be on my webserver on the school wifi. Having one open to the whole school would be so much better.

@futurebird I'm thinking it's the uncanny valley in action here.No one thinks the robot is anywhere close to being a person, so giving it pronouns is a cute anthropomorphisation. That's more similar to giving a car pronouns and a nickname. Also feels a little like a pet.AI sounds pretty human but without a soul. Ones with audio even sound like real people (Scarlett Johansen, Susan Bennett). They are asking to be treated like people. And maybe that's the key, one is asking for it.

@futurebird a couple things I do. (It sounds like you're already doing some of these with slight variation):1. Tell them I make errors when programming. My former boss who worked for 30 years as a programmer still makes errors.Errors are not a bad thing. They are part of programming. Part of the process.Errors are hints. They are clues to figure out how to make the program work.
