Well, having someone drive into your stopped vehicle shakes you up more than you'd think. š¬

I used to regularly draw and attempt other art like things. In recent years that has stopped, but in the last few months I have been trying to get myself to doodle again. Here's a few things I had the least negative feelings about.#doodle #yaombaaa

I think "information workers" that don't generally have good measures of their "productivity" are susceptible to making judgements on whether something improves their productivity* on vibes alone. If it's one or more of new, novel, cool looking, fun, or everybody is doing it will be enough to persuade them that something must be improving their productivity.* Putting aside for the moment the unhealthy nature of a culture that prizes productivity above all else.

It's Bandcamp friday, and despite what currently appears to be the inevitable decline of a valuable service at the hands of the usual villains, today still allows you to maximize the money artists receive when you when you purchase some of their work.I can probably only pick up one album or maybe several singles this time around, and I am presently paralyzed by choice. But this track came across my email this morning:https://trevorhallmusic.bandcamp.com/track/come-sit-by-my-gardenhttps://isitbandcampfriday.com/#BandcampFriday

I've been using Python and the like for so long that it's strangely refreshing to have an opportunity to use a language with a compiler that yells at me for simple blunders and typos before I can run anything.

All these arguments about how to best manage memory in programming languages, and here I am still manually managing the memory of my computer by closing applications.

I've gotten into the habit of writing most of my command line tools to require an argument even if the argument doesn't do anything. Especially for anything potentially destructive. That way, if you just type the command with no arguments, you will get some help telling you what the command does and why'd you run it without causing any harm. A lot of my placeholder arguments are just "go".

I always feel unreasonably happy when I manage to fix something, especially if it's something I know others would likely throw away instead.

Reading about the situation with PFAS and how 3M knew it was being found in people's bodies as early as 1970s and knew it was toxic but buried the information. How many more examples do we need of corporations doing things that are antithetical to life itself? It seems clear that no set of laws, regulatory pressure, or good people on the inside will ever stop it. The problem is in the very structure of these companies. They can't do the right thing. They're not designed to.

I wonder how long before reading the docs just won't be an option anymore. Like the only thing we'll get is a chatbot trained on "vectorized" specifications or requirements. No docs will be written. It will be cheaper, you see.https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/news/microchip-intros-ai-powered-coding-assistant-for-embedded-developers/I disagree with the idea that going to read the docs is "distracting". That's just part of the job, to understand what I'm dealing with.

I was reading this summary of a paper from Apple on the limitations of LLMs:https://archive.is/clGGjAnd I got to this from the author of the post."The vision of AGI I have always had is one that combines the strengths of humans with the strength of machines, overcoming the weaknesses of humans. I am not interested in a āAGIā that canāt do arithmetic, and I certainly wouldnāt want to entrust global infrastructure or the future of humanity to such a system."Which got me thinking...

Makes total sense that blog post from the GitHub CEO opens with "AI" slop art meant to look like something from Studio Ghibli... Dicks.
