@anubis2814 @futurebird microeconomics is more than a science, it's mostly just provable mathematics. for instance if we spend $100 buying you a benefit that you value at $70, that is $30 of dead weight loss. That is an empirical fact. so by calling economics closer to philosophy than science, you again prove that you don't understand. You cited absolutely no evidence to support anything you're saying, including this hand wavy assertion that I don't know what empirical means. try using evidence.

@anubis2814 @futurebird it is also trivially logically provable that paying someone above the market rate for their labor is equivalent to charity. which you can be mad about, but it's equivalent to being mad that someone isn't giving away all their wealth until they are as poor as the poorest person in the universe. this isn't "philosophy", it's logically provable.

@anubis2814 @futurebird in an efficient market, prices work so that any two things of equivalent price could be exchanged via a hypothetical series of trades. That is trivially provable and it's the whole point. If you distort this you create dead weight loss. inefficient allocation.

@futurebird Well I work for a self-driving car company and while I hate cars and will probably end up moving to the Netherlands to get away from them, and primarily use my electric car go bike, I do think the numbers already speak to there being significantly superior to human drivers. they always stop at stop signs, they respect speed limits, they recognize painted bike lanes etc.

@georgetakei it would better for human welfare if the states decided on virtually everything. then you always have a respite from bad laws and people can vote with their feet on where to live. game theory says this is the better system.

@toor @georgetakei yeah, it's already visible today. federal laws like DOMA and controlled substances prevented blue states from being progressive, and still do. you're asymmetrically considering the impact. i think letting voters in red states control my life in oregon is insane.

@toor @georgetakei i grew up in rural southeast kansas and lived in brutal poverty, and yet had no problem moving to arizona in my 20s working at restaurants and other odd jobs. there are plenty of cheap places to live in blue states.

@futurebird maybe, but i don't think you're going to change that. just like i can't change how dawkins's original conception of "meme" became co-opted to mean "cute cat gifs". i don't know of any other word that captures that sense of "absurdist virtue signaling" to even use in its place.
