"But Crash," you might ask, "Why not just have students make their OWN music?"I have. I do. I will again. But making good music takes time, and my curriculum is heavily geared towards video production. Hard to finish a 2 week video project if 1.5 weeks are spent making a hit soundtrack.

Shout-out to @socrates and Scholar.social in general. It might not have ended up being /my/ instance, but it's one of the better ones out there. If you're looking for a home among academics, chances are it's a good fit for you.

Reminder that smaller and/or more focused Mastodon instances tend to be better instances..social is OK as a starting point, but consider the following:For academics: scholar.socialFor artists: mastodon.artLike IT, old computers, and breaking things? hackers.townLike talking about games? elekk.xyzThese are well-moderated instances that will make your experience on here significantly less like Twitter.

Suggestion to try out everything in VM, because surely everyone understands VM.3. Bragging about personal setup.Only the forum mod actually addressed the question asked....Please support better funding for public education. Hey, new/returning people...Not every instance on here is a general discussion anything goes instance.Scholar.social is for academics.Elekk.xyz is for gamers.Etc. etc. etc./Please/, when you sign up for an instance, read the rules to understand the community you're joining.I'm seeing people complaining about instances for enforcing rules that have been in place for years. This /does/ make someone look bad, but it's not the instance admin.

The instances I respect have very hard working admin who make sure to keep their communities strong and thriving.Don't make it harder on those admin because you just want a place to archive your tweets.Or you want to fill the local timeline with content unrelated to the theme of your instance.Or you want to make Mastodon into the numbers game that corporate social media has become. Many instances that encourage that get defederated from the ones with respectable admin.

And if you're not an instance admin, but also you're not on .social or .online, there's still a chance your instance admin will be willing to upload custom emoji. It couldn't hurt to ask, but please be understanding if they say no. :blobpurpleheart:

A good instance will occasionally close its registration for new members to settle in. To do otherwise can lead to runaway growth making it too hard to moderate. But some interests have historically only had one instance - scholar.social for academics, for example.Which is to say: If you feel able to manage a server mentally and financially, don't be afraid to do it. You aren't competing, you're providing more space and less pressure for specialized servers.

Super large instances are a mistake. If your instance has 1,000+ active accounts, is your local timeline even usable? Is expedient and proactive moderation even a thing?

Spinster markets itself as a feminist instance, but it's a TERF instance; One of the older ones, co-started by Alex Gleason, defederated by so many of us so long ago that I rarely see it brought up any more.If you're an admin of a new instance, and you value keeping the trans people on your platform safe, #FediBlock spinster.xyz.Receipt: This is one of their mods. Check the pinned toot. https://spinster.xyz/@Vaishax

Morals of the story:1. You're free to do what you want.2. You are not free from how people choose to respond.3. Reading the room is usually a good strategy to avoid problems with # 2 on this list. There are respectable instances that would have been unhappy irregardless with the choices RPi made, but they way they chose to announce/spin this were so blatantly tone-deaf that they probably made the fallout be worse for them.

For those of you that dislike cryptocurrencies, I just learned about https://public.mitra.social which declares itself to be a "Federated social network with monetization features."The monetization is with Monero, which apparently is a cryptocurrency? Admin has an alt on poa.st so that's another (unnecessary) strike against it in my opinion.Don't forget to block mitra.social to make sure you get all future subdomains.#FediBlock

@fcktheworld587 Even if true (I've no desire to research it, as every other crypto I've learned about has soured me to any new crypto), everything else about this instance makes me want to avoid it.

#FediBlock @cloy@techhub.social is building an instance scraper to implement full-text search, two things that most admin I interact with on here don't want.Current plan is to have an opt-out option, but it still looks like a pathway to abuse at worst and additional drains on servers as the tool indexes every toot on an instance.Excuse is "The API will let me do it."Reciept: https://techhub.social/@cloy/109598814392511612

@fristi He said it was going to, but a lot of Mastodon admin don't have access to their robots.text file - or any part of their file structure, to be honest. So it's "opt out but not for you."
