@wjmaggos @pj @cwarzel.bsky.social what an interesting idea.I was wondering about a federated substack a while back... That would be interesting, how to pay creators on fedi?

@wjmaggos @pj @cwarzel.bsky.social yes, ghost sort of does it.I did dive a little into adding mastodon / activity pub to WordPress too, but got caught up with work.I think a creator protocol is a great idea!I imagined a subscription model for #foss and #creators where you track who you visit/consume each month. Then reward a % of your subscription to them.Roadblocks1. How to manage it?2. Transaction costs3. How to track it?This discussion, and being on fedi, makes me... /

@wjmaggos @pj @cwarzel.bsky.social.. Think it should be a user thing. Maybe a federated payment server? Or something. You install your own personal tracker, and rules about how to distribute the funds. Then the funds are sent to the local fedi pay server of the creator. All controlled by the user. Owned by the user. Maybe it is a ETH coin that is currency tied, to reduce transaction costs. That part can come later. The important thing is personal tracking, via personal data... /

@wjmaggos @pj @cwarzel.bsky.social... Something like @kevin's reader app, that you setup yourself.Just not sure how to it to track in apps. But maybe a new masto/activity pub reader fork could add this ability where you put your personal tracking server details there. Some api hosted by a federated fedipay server. That you can host yourself, or join other accounts. Same sort of rules as the fediverse.

@wjmaggos @pj @cwarzel.bsky.social @Jeremiah yes, crypto doesn't have a great reputation - but I think this is the type of think it was actually designed for - small transactions, low cost, fast. But adding a level of difficulty for now.Maybe just start with tracking and self reporting. Then add the "pool of money" distribution part. Relatively difficult given the global world, and the not so global currency/ banking system. But someone like #Wise might be able to help with that

@dobetterinstitute @futurebird I totally agree. But I don't like nebula. And having a bunch of different subscriptions to substack, pagreon, kofi etc I also don't like.So I have started working on @fedipay fedipay.netAn open source, decentralised creator reward system so I can pay creators my way, with simple transactions ixeally eventually too

@futurebird @dobetterinstitute @fedipay mailing cash! Crazy. In Australia and Europe banking is easy. But the idea is a creator/contributor creates an account on a fedipay server. They put their chosen way to receive payment there.Eventually the servers will communicate with each other to settle up, and any remaining funds are transferred back out to their final place. For now I am just building the actual server and extension for tracking (that you own and control)

@futurebird @dobetterinstitute @fedipay hard and expensive to send cash $1 to an eastern european, $1 to a canadian and $1 to a vietnamese guy....But what if I sent $10 to fedipay.and 100 other people did (1000).Then fedipay worked out that the server in eastern europe needs ~333 and canada needs ~334 and vietnamese server needs ~333Then the local server admin could use the local bank to send $1 to by bank transfer to the local developer - etc.

@futurebird @dobetterinstitute @fedipay I totally agree, getting away from the big players is important. In Australia we can easily pay other people with their phone number. In the US it is hard - that is why Paypal and others came to be.In the UK and EU, it is really simple, and free to do transfers.I imagine getting a community bank or building society involved to help with the actual money part - eventually that might solve multiple problems. It would mean creators have to open an account

@futurebird @dobetterinstitute @fedipay that is getting into a crypto discussion... which I think is best avoided.Philosophy is good though... all money is debt... money is not real at all, but a figment of our imagination :D

@futurebird I totally agree.I was a property developer and have worked in finance. I know how these people think (and I have to stop myself sometimes)But Bank of Dave - he is doing it for the people. I want to see that happen too.No rent seeking, just rewarding people.Ideally a network of trusted servers, maybe run by banks, or local councils or local clubs/ charities with a treasurer that oversees the distributions, which are mostly automated.

@wjmaggos most people on social are waiting for their trusted friends to tell them where to go...So tell everyone to join a fedi server...And everyone who joins here can tell their friends.Network effect.Eventually it will work.We can only make it easier.Like @admin @openportability @FediTipsKeep making it easy.

@wjmaggos @admin @openportability interesting. I would have said the opposite. Fedi is more sociable atm. News and journalists are not really here yet.Verified here will be easy though.Servers that are sub domains of trusted outlets will only have their staff on them. So we will know masto.nytimes.com is definitely the ny times people...

So people are starting to flow to SubStack for writing. The authors, so they can get paid for their work, and the readers - as it is an amazing source of great writing. But this is just building another eco system for big corporate to take a big chunk from other peoples creativity imo. What is the Fediverse/ Open source way to 1. Reward content creators/ writers?2. Allow for publishing - should we create mastostack.com?Love to know the thoughts of @fosstodon people on this..

Thanks @Gina Interesting. That then lead me to question comparing @wordpress with #Ghost as why wouldn't a self hosted wordpress work in a similar way.I mean I can't see why Ghost is particularly better still. Wordpress with Fediverse plugins is kinda similar, and more control. Just musing to myself here... unless you know. I think the "feed" and the "algorithm" are why people go to the SubStack world... maybe? not sure.

@lightweight super interesting. As I am about to boot up an instance of mastodon that is all about data sovereignty - but of course I don't check myself. I have now installed your fav extension :)
