       @lextenebris @cybergoths @mattkay @shawntomkin "(complex shaded and lined backgrounds behind text, anyone? Early World of Darkness? Just me then?)."Yeah, bleah.Also one of the GURPS books was awful this way, "GURPS Cops" I think.On Traveller, while you can get scanned versions of most books on CD-ROM, some of the scans aren't so good because of the shaded background messing up the OCR.

       @MishaVanMollusq @futurebird It is a good novel, but I don't buy the bit about how the system's societies became decadent and corrupt because they had no hope of interstellar travel.

       @lextenebris @CGHildebrandt I think that falls down on the "against the rest of the Free World'." part.

       @rob A few decades ago I read some epistolary SF story, probably in Analog. Guy was working on his Diss. project of inducing nuclear fusion in water. An official got ahold of it and classified it. So he couldn't access his data or work on it until he paid $20,000* for a security clearance. So he couldn't get his PhD. So he couldn't get a university job.Ended up a HS science teacher. Doing cool experiments generating power from water...* When $20,000 was a decent year's salary.

       @golgaloth @futurebird One thing I like in #CJCherryh's "Serpent's Reach" was the idea that each majat (space ant) was an individual, but each time two majat meet they "take taste", i.e. exchange saliva, which updates their memories to be identical.

       @Enema_Cowboy @zombiewarrior @pluralistic Robert Anton Wilson said "I'd be a libertarian except I don't hate poor people."

       @mitch @pluralistic One thing that struck me many years ago about "conservatives" is that they don't ever want the government to do anything that doesn't somehow involve hurting people. Possibly people who deserved to be hurt, but the hurting was the important bit.

       @mitch @pluralistic Doing something to help people was always unthinkable, even if that would prevent whatever injustice people were supposed to be hurt because of.

       @Nonilex Sure, invest $350B in a country you aren't allowed to go to, that's smart...

       @futurebird Back in the 70s George RR Martin wrote a story "The Second Kind of Loneliness" about this. And about a lighthouse keeper in space.

       Can someone point to a guide on how to adjust my front derailer? I can shift up, but when I try to shift down it just stays on the larger gear. Only fix is to turn the bike upside down and move the chain by hand.#BikeNiteQ #BikeNitePQ
