@mogwai_poet I was honestly ready to dismiss this as silliness. But as I was frying an egg this morning, the cooking spray hit my nose by way of the hot iron, and I was immediately transported to Pittsburgh, spring of 2002, in the parking lot behind Morewood Gardens, cooking and serving waffles to my classmates on the midway while they constructed our Carnival booth.

[This is not gamedev-related, but I only have the one account and am not clear on Mastodon etiquette.]I made some music again! It's a mix of mountain dulcimer folk tunes, bleepy electronic stuff, a game soundtrack remix, some Windham Hill new-agey tracks, a few stabs at something funk-adjacent, a whimsical hip-hop mix... Fun to write, difficult to summarize. It's free, but today is Bandcamp Friday, so I get an even bigger cut of $0 than usual! https://postgoodism.bandcamp.com/album/tourism

Today's advice that I've given others & should follow myself more often: don't run performance tests until the unit tests are passing.

"Too many text files full of TODO bullet lists" is my version of "too many browser tabs". I was therefore *very* excited to learn about Todool at #HandmadeSeattle today, and will definitely be springing for a copy. https://skytrias.itch.io/todool

@RobD it's an idea whose time is ripe; I take no credit for it :)

@aras Patreon is the most familiar and probably has the most users (& thus the most potential donors). On the other hand, by that logic, I guess we should all still be using Twitter?I'm going to donate whatever service you choose. If it's one I've never heard of before...well, I like learning new things.

I don't really do graphics anymore (or VR, insofar as I ever did), but this still looks pretty neat: using VR-style async timewarp on non-VR games as a cheap path to a massive boost in the perceived frame rate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvqrlgKuowE

I have a coworker at Unity who's been wiping the floor with all of us with his compact, efficient #adventofcode solutions. What makes it especially galling is that he's doing it all on a 16 MHz 386SX, using Borland Turbo C++ 3.0. Even his write-up looks like a Wayback Machine snapshot of an early-90s Geocities homepage: http://clb.confined.space/aoc2022/Go, be impressed!(EDIT: the link was broken, but it's back now with further updates)

Day 1 impressions of Kerbal Space Program 2:- If you didn't play much KSP1 or felt it was too intimidating, you should give the sequel a chance; the core loop / new-player experience is much more streamlined and approachable.- If you DID play a bunch of KSP1, you will probably just be upset by all the stuff that's missing / not implemented yet, and may want to give KSP2 more time to cook.

"The Story of Mel, A Real Programmer" turned 40 years old just over a week ago; it was originally posted on May 21st, 1983. If you've ever wanted to read an epic poem about how FORTRAN is too cushy & high-level, now's your chance! https://www.reddit.com/r/programmingmemes/comments/zgerdg/mel_the_real_programmer/When I was a teenage larval programmer, I read Mel's story in the Jargon File. It made ZERO sense. I enjoyed revisiting it every year or two, and observing how much more of it I understood vs. the previous reading, until it all finally clicked.

I don't get to toot the work-stuff horn very frequently, but as of this week you can download an off-the-shelf LTS version of Unity (2022.3.0f1) and install a version of the DOTS Entities package that starts with "1.0" and doesn't end in "experimental" or "preview". A milestone 5+ years in the making! https://unity.com/releases/lts

I just started writing a new comment at the top of a function. I typed the leading "//", and GitHub Copilot suggested an auto-completion:// TODO: This function is a mess. It needs to be refactored to be more readable and maintainable.

A couple months ago, I spent a busy Saturday recreating a friend's favorite long-defunct Match 3 game from ~20 years ago, based mostly on a handful of surviving YouTube videos and screenshots. It was made for an audience of one, but in case anybody else has spent the last decade or two jonesing for Super Nisqually, jones no more! https://postgoodism.itch.io/yerriqually#gamedev #love2d
