Totally unexpected side effect of AI:A lecturer just told is we need to check our data carefully after downloading it to make sure it matches the source because "you can't trust technology and AI".We're downloading a csv of data points (human observations) from a selected area of a map, AI is not involved.

People are losing trust not in AI, but in computers in general because of their association with AI.The teacher mentioned above trains science students in using R. This is not a layperson's misunderstanding, it's a genuine loss of trust in the ability of computers.

I'm sure this was not at all unexpected for people who were studying this kind of thing, but is was news to me.

Saw a neighbour. Told her I was writing an essay on how we shouldn't use AI in education. She told me she saw something related on TV and I should try to find it on the Internet. It's a show where they get groups of parents together and have them advise each other on raising kids. This has absolutely nothing to do with what I'm doing, but I heard her out. From her description, I immediately got the impression this was a show intended to be controversial rather than helpful. Probably a channel 7 in-house thing. According to my neighbour one of the parents advised the others to set up a chatgpt 'friend' for their kid, "but it's okay because they set it all up especially beforehand for the kid, they had the tech sorted". It seems like this involved a vague layperson's understanding of prompting guardrails. My neighbour didn't seem overly concerned by this aspect of the story. Then the parent handed the device to the child and the first thing they showed the child typing was "I don't like boys" to which they showed chatgpt replying "I only like girls too". My neighbour found this part of the story extremely disturbing. My takeaway from this is conservative TV in australia wants to you believe AI is coming for your children (to turn them GAY :ohno: :oh_no_bubble:)

Hard to tell from this conversation, but I got the impression that the framing of the piece wasn't "you cannot effectively create guardrails within chatgpt to give a limited version of it to your child, that's not a function that's available, even if it says it is" instead the framing was "computer make child gay no matter how diligent adult. Only way to prevent gay is to stop computer touching child".

@davidrevoy that Thing is instantly recognisable as an unwanted AI feature. You captured the aesthetic perfectly.

This book is from 1980 and is full of stuff like this. I'm on the fence as to whether that means they're more or less likely to know what they did there.

I bought the horse tram book and it accidentally had this other book in it. Excellent random book, couldn't have asked for better. Remind me to pay the lady for it next time I go through Dunkeld.

You all have to remind me. If I post a photo from Dunkeld, grill me on whether I remembered to do this.
