Pushing free software/data and decentralized platforms, and boycotting proprietary software/data and centralized platforms, is not a “philosophical” matter. Or even an “ethical” one. And it’s not opposed to “pragmatism”.To choose proprietary software/data and centralized platforms is to choose to get backstabbed and exploited. It’s inevitable. History has proven it time and time again.Free software, free data, and decentralized platforms are the ONLY sane and pragmatic choice. Proprietary software/data and centralized services are a trap. Have you taken the bait? And are you encouraging others (through network effect) to do the same? 👀

Similarly, I use a federated platform as my primary means of chat and AV calls, and recommend you all do the same too. It’s called #Jabber a.k.a. #XMPP.The easiest way to start using it is to install Quicksy (Play Store, App Store, F-Droid) or Prāv (Play Store, F-Droid). They use your phone number for registration and contact discovery, similar to Signal, Telegram, and WhatsApp.You also have many apps and servers which do not need a phone number - see my quick and easy user’s guide to XMPP to learn more.And, as with anything I recommend, they are #FreedomRespecting software a.k.a. #libre software (sometimes mistakenly called #OpenSource or #FOSS) - the only kind of software that is trustworthy and resistant to monopolies.PS I don’t know who needs to hear this, but please do better than just following the herd and installing whatever the people in your circle did. I’ve always wanted to make a #FreedomRespecting (a.k.a. #FreeSoftware / #OpenSource / #FOSS) game or few.(That’s actually how I got into programming and art. Common story, right?)But most #libre #games are pretty derivative - libre ports of popular restricted games. (That’s not always a bad thing…I love SuperTuxKart, for one 🙂 And maybe it’s not always about a unique idea, but also great execution…)Is there a unique story you’d like to see made into a game? @november I use #XMPP as my sole chat and call medium, and find it pretty good. (I don’t use centralized/proprietary/unsustainable/NIH services like #WhatsApp, #Telegram, #Discord, #Signal, #Threema, #Matrix, etc)It’s often the case that people with the worst impression of XMPP used it ages ago, and did so with some terrible clients (Pidgin, Thunderbird)…I’ve written a guide that helps new users stick to the best clients and servers of the ecosystem, and avoid the underdeveloped parts. @chloeraccoon When a freedom-respecting program is missing a feature you want, you should look for another freedom-respecting program which does have it.Or try to do without the feature.Or try to implement it yourself, if you can program.If you really need the feature, and can’t program, then - rather than shelling out money and entering into an abusive relationship with a restricted program - you can try to raise a bounty for the feature. This is even more powerful when multiple users come together to do it. It’s what the Prāv community does for XMPP clients, or what the Debian Phosh Community does for the Debian phone software stack.In any case, you should not trust a restricted program for anything.

As an addendum to my earlier post…a lot of people from the free software community could stand to be more gentle and more patient with others.There’s a lot of anger there, but harboring and expressing anger or irritation at your audience is a great way to alienate them.Someone doesn’t have the same knowledge as you?If you have an expectation that “they ought to know!”, your response will make you (and others) miserable grumps.But if you see it as a gift, an opportunity to help someone…you will automatically be gentle, patient, and happy to help.Obviously, such an attitude will also lead to more success at introducing others to alternative software.#FreeSoftware #OpenSource #FOSS #Privacy #Linux #contraLibre
