@vriska @thatbrickster @shibao It comes from the Old English word ærs, with the same meaning. The r would have been pronounced back then, but stopped being pronounced some time in the 17-1800s. I suspect the American spelling started as people self-censoring using the similar sounding word that means donkey, but as donkeys became less common, the modern meaning came to dominate.

@LukeAlmighty I support 'soft' eugenics, but not 'hard' eugenics. I don't support forced sterilisations or abortions, because I don't trust the state to wield that power. I do support policies like incentive payments for having more children (for qualifying couples) or making voluntary sterilisation a condition for single parent welfare payments.
