#NCP This is actually some big news: a lot of folks originally joined the Tweeter because of #Diggnation and #TWiT hyping up Twitter in its earliest days. I know I joined because of them (esp. Leo talking about it all the time)Well Kevin Rose, founder of #Digg, said if he got 1,000 likes to a post he made on Threads, he'd delete his Tweeter account. He got them, and he did.Makes me think - if I get 200 likes here in the #fediverse on this post, pointing out Kevin's post, I'll delete CoffeeGeek's Tweeter account too. (I promise, this isn't likebait lol!)https://www.threads.net/@kevinrose/post/C8qfqaUM5rI

Yup. I did it. Now in the "deactivation phase'. Need to wait 30 days to permanently delete the account.

When I pulled the plug in October, 2023 on my daily Twitter engagement, and went all in on the #Fediverse, I had some goals in mind, written in my desktop notebook.- No longer get my news from a social media feed (instead reading more traditional journalism)- Try to avoid negativity, at least as much as my personality will allow- Seek out creative, engaging content producersand most important:- Always interact; stop just consuming, and don't just use the platforms as an advertising, click-driving vehicle.

#NCPHeh. Okay Instagram..."It's been a while since you boosted a post..." That's true. If "a while" is "it has never happened". :) :) I will never, ever give Meta a dime. Ever. https://www.instagram.com/coffeegeek/

Some coffee history for you. This is the one of the first ever publicly posted photos of a chopped portafilter shot pull, in action. It was posted to CoffeeGeek's forums back in 2005, within 2 days of the "design concept" idea for drilling the bottom of a PF off to expose the filter basket being posted to a now defunct coffee forum. Shot taken at Elysian Coffee, in Vancouver. No one had seen this before this photo.cc @espresso #coffeehistory #espresso #choppedportafilter

So some bad news regarding our account here on Mastodon and the #Fediverse I'm going to have to suspend, at least for now, posting any links to content on our website on this platform. The #MastoDdos effect is only getting worse, and it now brings our website down for a solid 5 to 7 minutes everytime I post a URL. We've tried to fix this on our end, without any real luck. Caching, Cloudfare, etc etc. None of it works. What I'll do instead is post links to our Threads account when new content is posted on our website. A bit of a weird fix, but until the infrastructure in the fediverse evolves to deal with this growing problem, I can't have our website go down that often. It has further unintended side effects (like harming our SEO ranking).Of course, I'll still be participating here daily on coffee subjects!

Actually, I can still post content links here to CoffeeGeek, but I have to be smart about it: I have to post them as links, and also attach a photo to my post, so that the link doesn't trigger a card call to our website. So, going forward (for now at least), when we do post new content on CoffeeGeek, I will post the link here, but also attach a photo related to the story. The link should still work, but not bombard our website from 1000s of instances looking for a card.

Oh dear.Just saw another YTer doing their "goodbye" videos. Packing it in after 3 o 4 years of doing YT stuff.I mean, I'm 23 years in and still going strong. Maybe there's a big difference between someone else hosting your shite, having to deal with their constant hoops, crap payments, algorithms, yada yada, and actually hosting your own content, and being responsible for your own income sources. Plus, to be fair, YT commenters are super toxic. I could see how that wears people down.

This is a long one, so bear with me.I'm very sad that Whole Latte Love, a company we've partnered with for years and years, has recently decided to no longer be an advertiser on CoffeeGeek a few months ago. I do hope they reconsider, as we've done a lot to promote this company over the years. They've decided platforms like Google and Meta are the best areas to spend their advertising dollars. They also felt they were not getting enough clicks and traffic through their coffee and espresso- targetted ads on our low-impact, no popups platform. The real reason I'm posting this though is this: If you want independent content producers in the arenas you are interested to continue and thrive, you have to do your part:- don't adblock those sites if at all possible. I can understand if they're over-run with constant Adsense popup ads and big in your face ads every paragraph, but many indie sites do NOT do that, yet still get adblocked.- don't just click, but SUPPORT the independent advertisers that support those content producers. They often has the same or lower prices than Amazon, often have free shipping, and in almost every case have way, way better customer service. With both of these things, it often doesn't cost you a penny more, or any kind of increased frustration, but you're supporting independent businesses and not feeding the Amazon / Google / Meta engines. If you enjoy independent, honest content about the hobbies and interests you love, you have to do your part to ensure they thrive and continue. Pretty soon, all you're going to have left is AI-generated blabble on corporate-controlled websites.

#NCP I rarely view Youtube videos on my Android phone. But I do view them a lot on my Samsung S9 Android tablet. I have NOT used the official Youtube app for years. I stopped using it when ads started taking over the interface. I use the Brave browser on my Android tablet to view Youtube vids. This eve, to try out some new Gemini features on my new Pixel 9 Pro, I launched the Youtube app.HOLY CRAP, IT IS ABSOLUTELY A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE in terms of UI and getting to content you want.Ad, after ad, after ad, after short, after ad, and more ad placements, and still more ads. How does ANYONE still use this complete #enshittification app? It's hard to believe an app could be worse than Instagram or Facebook for ads and unfriendly UI, but yup, Youtube's app is that.So... do what I do on all my android devices, and you'll thank me.a) install the Brave browser (chrome based) on your phone. Make it your default browser.b) Visit Youtube.com in the Brave browser, log in, and make sure the Brave shields are UP for the domain.c) View all Youtube vids through that source. Browse and use it exactly like you would the desktop browser version of Youtube. You will not see a single ad. You won't have videos interrupted by ads. You won't be forced to view shorts. You won't get popups and time outs. I am normally not one to say shut out content creators' sources of incomes, but once the platform crosses that enshittificaiton line, all bets are off.Oh, one extra protip: if you use a Google Chromecast dongle (the one with Google TV built in), learn how to install an app called "Smarttube" on your device. You'll thank me (and uninstall the Youtube app).

Had a thread go completely viral over on Threads, about nespresso and its cost. About 100,000 views since I posted it this AM.A few things I've learned about Threads and when posts go viral there.a) viral ≠ new followers. b) this is when all the cranks come out. People who don't actually read your post, or decide they know a lot more than the fellow who's been studying and writing about coffee for 27 years (okay, that's smug of me), and people who don't like their own safe worldview challenged, or being shown that the product they use and love has costs and repercussions. Natia and I spent a lot of today responding to a lot of those comments. I don't know it if was worth doing so.https://www.threads.net/@coffeegeek/post/DECv8aXpUQO

Over on Threads, I posted a long thread about why we don't usually review mega-expensive espresso equipment (or $2,000 grinders) on CoffeeGeek. Linked below. One person remarked they like when I "pull back the curtain" from time to time regarding how the website operates.I do pull back the curtain often, because we have absolutely nothing to hide with CoffeeGeek. We don't do backroom deals, have never, ever taken payment to promote a product, write a fluff piece about an advertiser, or write a favourable review, and I try to pay my writers fairly, including some profit sharing in our affiliate link programs. I like it when websites and content creators are honest like this with their readers and viewers, so I try to do it myself as much as I can.https://www.threads.net/@coffeegeek/post/DFZhhdmRAA6

@mekkaokereke I think Trump and his cronies have severely underestimated what Canada AND Mexico will do here. I can't speak for Mexico, but I know as a nation, everyone up here is beyond pissed right now. Trump saw Colombia cave within hours, and figured we'd do something similar. That's not our game at all.Speaking of games, the US national anthem was loudly booed at the Ottawa Senators / Minn. NHL game today. I've attended literally 100s of sporting events in Canada against US teams and teams from other countries. Not once in my life did I ever hear a single boo at a foreign anthem. This is unprecedented. And those folks aren't liberal lefties; those folks are pretty right wing, Trudeau hating types. That's a tell.I think Canada will roll up its collective sleeves, get through 6-9 months of economic hardships and a lack of certain products, but in that time, will find new global partnerships to embrace, new trading partners for our natural resources and manufactured goods, and new partners to buy from. And we'll be much stronger for it.The USA, in the meantime, will continue to weaken under Trump because no rational country will want to enter into any kind of trade agreement with you folks as long as he's your leader. He cannot be trusted, and he's proven it, time and time again.

@mekkaokereke interestingly enough, over on another social network, with my non-coffee account, I made a post about how all Americans made the bed they've chosen to lie in, and now have to find out what that's going to be like for the next four years, and basically, you brought this upon yourselves...and oh my did I hear back from a lot of extreme left wing people super pissed with me. How I should have sympathy for them. How I should not laugh at their predicament. How I was a fascist too, for saying what I did.One particular misguided type even admitted they didn't vote for Harris, but voted third party (in Oregon), and how dare I say their vote counted towards Trump's win. Right now, Americans have only one option: they need to stand up and fight. By "fight" I mean follow MLK's modus and forcefully but peacefully protest. Non violent protests. Mass strikes. Mass disruptions. Circus Clown's limo driving through town? Get 10,000 people to stage a sit in and block the route. Stage sit ins at congresspeople and senator offices. En masse.Rage posting on social media? As Cocaine Jr. likes to say: "that's a nothingburger".

Also, we have fresh content up on CoffeeGeek/.com (sorry for the non link, but mastodon doesn't handle links well, flooding our site when I post one), including a new review for the 1ZPresso Q-Air. We also have three other manual grinder reviews on tap, including the Kingrinder P2 I mentioned in a post a few minutes ago.I hope you visit!

John, flippin' Cena: actual CoffeeGeek.Who would have thought. I'm kinda like John, but where he judges cafes on their flat whites, I judge cafes on how they do americanos. I especially love that he's doing this video for Bon Apetit magazine, a Conde Nast publication, and he kinda blasts the Conde Nast cafe for phoquing up the flat white. #coffeefeed #espressofeed #flatwhite #espresso #johncena
