@freemo @GeePawHill Let's be clear - as you tell me "objectively" that there are no problems, I'm not going to point you at an admin who defederated you from her instance to go complain. As for why she didn't report them, I imagine she did. Also she defederated qoto from the instance she administrates.

@freemo @GeePawHill As far as recognising the need for academic freedom -- I do. But I assume it should be obvious to you why problematic people would be attracted to that freedom. While qoto has the "no hate speech" rule, how *exactly* it's enforced is going to be key to not running a Nazi bar, for all the usual reasons you've heard many times.I haven't interacted with many qoto users (though you're kind of painting a picture.) So I don't know the enforcement in practice.

@freemo @GeePawHill Oh! You're the primary moderator of qoto. And you don't defederate for basically any reason (yes, I've read the more involved description at https://qoto.org/about/more.)So hate speech and harassment are locally and individually forbidden, and two instances, ever, have been silenced for the whole "circumventing blocks" thing -- and none, ever, for hate speech. Thus the focus on "bad actors" and individual posts.Huh. That's, uh, something.

@freemo @GeePawHill I mean, that *sounds* potentially good.If I hadn't specifically heard complaints about qoto, it would sound maybe-good, if very different. The combination of that, with the defederation and hate speech policies, with the immediate "tell me who said that" response from you *feel* threatening (no, not to me personally.)It's entirely possible you're fine and I just happened to see several things that look like red flags in succession.

@neil It's hard to imagine any plan working that requires a random Mastodon instance admin to successfully sue Meta over breach of their terms of use, which Meta never explicitly agreed to.I'm not saying it's impossible that they'd be in the right, legally speaking. I'm saying the amount of legal fees involved would be utterly unworkable.

@mayonesa @CheRosach Very true. It's weird how the Tories are still managing to reproduce the corruption, bad central planning, horrifying degradation in service, oppression of less-favoured countries and minorities and so on that characterised the Soviets, all in the name of being their opposite. They're not there yet. There's no *new* Irish Potato Famine, which runs roughly historically parallel to the Holodomor. But it gets easier to see all those parallels every year.

@mayonesa @CheRosach Eh, not sure how much "Soviet" equates to "Communist." Most self-declared Communists would argue that point pretty fiercely 🙂 (I'm not a Communist, myself.)

@paranoia_machinery @darkuncle I know, right? His parents named him Robert, not Bob.That so-called "Bob Dole" guy -- actually "Robert Joseph Dole", even Wikipedia says so -- was living in fantasy-land, and his idiotic enablers were just helping him be a dick.He introduced himself by a fake name, over and over, on national TV no less. I'm glad he lost, but he should have been tossed out of the Senate far earlier. From here on out, I'm a Robert Dole Truther.

@paranoia_machinery @darkuncle Notice how you can't think *why* it's different? There's a hint there.I'm only sort of kidding about "enablers." The big difference is whether you get buy-in from the people around you."But his parents called him Bob from when he was little." Yeah, turns out trans people can do that too. I know some who have. What's weird is that those are the ones guys like you seem to object the *most* to.

@markwitton @AmyIsCoolz @mike I'm nowhere near those numbers, but my ebook and video class were making between US $5k and $15k/year, depending on the year. And that, too, is really challenging to manage on Mastodon.Twitter is/was really good at commerce-flavoured weak connections between many people. Mastodon prefers personal connections between much smaller groups. Not so good to sell into, at least not in similar ways. And the obvious ways to try seem bad (e.g. Avon-style "friend" sales.)

@aweatherall @ParadeGrotesque He was the one going through my mind with a Mozart-like upbringing, yeah. I presume Musk wouldn't really understand what Mozart-like meant in practice (Bezos might) but Jacob Collier is pretty much that.Though Weird Al isn't so far off either.

@futurebird I just picked up a copy of Fluent Python based on this recommendation. You're right, it's good, and very specifically this *kind* of good.I have no idea what the equivalent is for Java, though.

@futurebird Mostly a VP pick is to attract one group of voters or another - Biden was very much to lock down Ohio, for instance, and to a lesser extent other Midwestern states. But yeah, hard to tell if he cares about that.

@jamesshore Nice! I've been reading Robert Austin's "Measuring and Managing Performance in Organizations" recently. Not sure if you've read it, but you seem very in-tune with its sensitivities, right down to quoting Deming about KPIs/Managing-By-Objective, etc.It basically explains why this approach is eventually doomed in large orgs (short version: gaming of metrics). But you seem to know that, and are paying attention. Also, smaller org.

@futurebird @sysfrank I think some individual fascists still see education as powerful. But they tend to get overthrown by the genuinely incurious and genuinely uneducated.Success in Fascism is about denying reality vigorously and without hesitation. Smarter, more educated and more competent people are at a genuine disadvantage.Which is why the "next fascist will be Trump but competent" worry isn't as bad as it sounds. There are a lot of those. They lose to Trump, over and over.

@futurebird @wa7iut @fulelo Oh hey, fist bump! I graduated with Maths and Comp Sci bachelors degrees in '98.Agree on the lack of humanities, vocational focus, etc. And yup, it's like the whole campus is made of basements.

@futurebird I keep a large tin of pure powdered caffeine next to my other tea accoutrement.I *have* had "I can see the universe" moments from my tea, but very definitely from the caffeine. Works much better with black tea than most others -- the unexpected bitterness of caffeine in the wrong drink (e.g. orange juice, white tea) can be *vile*. Black tea is at least *supposed* to be a bit bitter.

@futurebird Yes. To him, truth or lies are irrelevant, in that the message serves a different purpose.A lot of people point out that, in a technical sense, that makes what he's doing bullshit. Not intentional lies exactly, even when he knows he's lying. Just statements where he doesn't care whether he's telling the truth.

@futurebird I think AI is here to stay as a better context-specific autocomplete, e.g. non-English-question non-code-review mode of GitHub CoPilot. However, you don't need most of the really intensive server-based giant LLMs for that. A local one with decent (but not amazing) training data is perfectly adequate.

@danjac@masto.ai @jwcph @benni Eh, Bill Gates is trying to cure malaria. We're not getting zero. But like the last Gilded Age, not enough to be worth it.
