I came here specifically because I thought this place was funded for several years, but maybe it’s been several years since I came here already.off the top of my head I don’t have too many ideas which meet the criteria you set out, because most such instances are on the blocklists managed by the scolds who orbit mastodon dot art and the like.maybe I’ll start my own.

@hancocktom41 I thought of that, unfortunately my life is an absolute shitshow now and in recent years, I have no way to guarantee I could keep up with moderation, software updates, etc until I have stable housingI do have some pretty nifty self-hosting infrastructure though, which does make this at least possible from e.g. a home internet connection (as opposed to setup with a monthly server bill)

@hancocktom41 I also have run online communities multiple times in the past, and been on "social media" since the early 1990s, so I will be keeping it in mind, who knows, maybe my life will stabilize before Sept... I'm certainly making every effort to be able to pounce on the opportunity and further build up a self-hosted infrastructure if such opportunity arises.

@hancocktom41 how'd you wind up on decept?in my case I chat with @sun on my techbro main and he mentioned decept's launch right as I was looking for a place to yell about politics, which 90% of ppl I engage with on that "shard" of my identity don't really want to hear on their fedi timeline (for good reason and I agree, hence the voluntary self-segregation)I'm interested to hear that you found a well-loved spot here, I haven't integrated with the locals anywhere near as much as I usually like to because I've been overwhelmed most of the last 5 years, so just came on when I needed to vent on politics mostly. which has now taken on some additional facets - privacy, civil liberties etc.I am very grateful to @am for putting up with my "annoyed @ politics type of grampa" persona on the local timeline tho. always planned to browse thru the local timeline more often when I got a breather, I just never did.

@hancocktom41 at any rate I found out this week I'm not gonna have a place to stay in about a month, so I think I gotta get that sorted first, despite the fact my hardware/software stack is designed to be portable and to enable selfhosting from random residential connections where I have zero access to the router.although maybe I should just go for it and launch a single user instance if I can find a spare weekend, and then open it up later if I can keep it accessible 🤔 it's honestly kind of a tough call
