@futurebird @remote_orb "But it is possible to make it harder for such people. And it's possible to catch them."This.I hate that bad actors frame these issues to make kids look annoying or make parents feel more guilty when they aren't the real problem.Predators are the issue. We have and can build environments that don't enable predatory behavior.

I let the little guy settle in against me and when I moved slightly to get up, he opened his eyes and put his paw up "wait". And then he went right back to this. So, I guess five more minutes...#cats #kittens #CatsOfMastodon

@futurebird Mine do that, I think they love the trust exercise of it. The more uncomfortable you are, the more they're certain of your love.

@futurebird I think they're also relying on that effect where creative folks, influencers and others rush to secure their spot in an online space and ay around with it to try to get eyes on themselves. But, the folks making the best stuff are mostly uninterested in this tech bro bullshit even though many can see that, divorced from these losers, AI has applications worth someday exploring. But, AI can't escape the utter losers who are promoting it with their limited imaginations.

@futurebird Gossip is also extremely gendered but gossip is a survival tool for folks who are disempowered. Its how you spread unprovable information like, "that person is a creep, they touched me in passing in a way that felt icky and coercive".Does gossip have downsides, yes, 100% gossip can become extremely dangerous. However...

@futurebird Cat teeth are adorable even as they lurk in the dark hours prior to feeding time promising to use said teeth if feeding time isn't early.Am I possibly infected with something that makes me believe this self dooming thing? I mean sure but look at the cat teeth and tell me they aren't kind of adorable.

@futurebird You need to find designers who embrace maximalism. They are, imo, the only ones who can fathom large book collections.I just stuff my books into limited book shelves and put lots of random pieces on display in front of said books (pictures, travel knick knacks, rocks and empty glass honey bottles with dried flowers). It is very maximalist but there's some design to it.Bonus points, I use museum wax to anchor knick knacks because cats.

@futurebird On board with all but the last one. I think color sorting of objects is a very specific personality quirk. Not a bad one but I think there are humans who do it and ones that don't.Subject and size sorting is the only sane way to organize a bookshelf if you're a reader. I also do a weird thing within a genre so my books on primates all cluster together & transition into books specifically on the histories of various drugs which transitions into books on magic through a cultural lens

@futurebird @jbenjamint Despite not being a color sorter for objects (apart from art supplies) I think it looks beautiful.I just personally don't think like that for finding said objects. My brain is more like a word map, probably the early writing/reading emphasis played a role. So, personally wouldn't do this but I really admire seeing it when people do. Beautiful but a little confusing.

@futurebird I was listening to a couple episodes of The Checkout ( https://www.thecheckoutradio.com/ )and I wonder if it relates to the fact that grocery stores increased profits by increasing their stock of processed foods (frozen foods being a large part of that). The monopolies in the food industry seem to guide a whole cascade of other social changes as we've conformed to how the industry wants to serve us food.@jaystephens

@futurebird Because the fridge size increase has happened alongside the growing space in grocery for frozen meals. Older fridges are smaller and their freezers are tiny. I've lived in a couple apartments that had those. And those fridges had a lot more room for the standard ingredients you'd use to cook with that need to be kept cold.Grocery stores make more profit from frozen foods because they lack the various problems of fresher foods. The Checkout discusses this.@jaystephens

@futurebird Re: Interior design for renters: https://youtube.com/@alexandragaterHer channel is the primary one I've seen that regularly shows how to customize your space as a renter. But, yes, not being able to customize your living space is deeply distressing and demoralizing. We are still animals and we need to feel a certain "ownership" of our nest. There is a cruelty to the renting experience that goes unacknowledged.

@futurebird The studio fix series on Alexandra's channel covers smaller spaces and the types of furniture that can make them feel more functional.I keep hoping to see more folks tackle this kind of interior design because it expands on the technical work that happened with tiny houses (expanding small living spaces) but brings it to the renter space where you just can't do as many things with the structure itself.

@alexanderondu @TheOneSwit @NiwlCraft Any exploration of AI/LLM in a solarpunk world would need to consider why it is necessary vs training living beings.I can see an exploration involving finding the technology abandoned because it was too resource intensive and treating it like a detective story..."what were they trying to build? why did it fail? could it be made whole in this new world?" etcThere are the small models that people are playing with but that's not what folks are using...

@alexanderondu @TheOneSwit @NiwlCraft To generate images instead of hiring artists. And, although the smaller models might somehow work in a solarpunk setting, one would need to understand that as long as the environmentally destructive, corporate models exist, those are the versions we know to be incompatible with the ideas solarpunk is working with.

@futurebird They seem to have changed the formula on candy canes over the years. I did enjoy them as a kid but as an adult I did encounter the various formulations that were "off".Peppermint sticks and candy canes are nice in tea or hot chocolate. You use them to mix it and the sticks melt in them like sugar cubes (which I also miss from childhood). But, its been over a decade since I tried any Christmas candy.

@futurebird They had to travel for a census and I think they went to where Joseph was born. I'm not sure we know where Mary was from? Everywhere was full because sure, I guess it was an area without sufficent jobs or housing so lots of folks left but had to return to be counted.I'm not sure if I'm missing anything.

Arguably, the best Disney movies came from the artists involved working within the constraints and still trying to make art.The biggest problem as they've gobbled up everything is that artist vision is increasingly sanitized both within that system and by that system being seen as a valid venue for art. Which, its important to admit that it mostly is not even though occassionally little rebellions come through.@futurebird @simon_brooke @mina @EricLawton @DoomsdaysCW @Dianora

@futurebird They don't even seem to respond well to people complying. Its stunning but my sense is that they recognize that most "polite" folks won't watch video of their atrocities and so they think they will get away with anything even as it is all filmed because folks will read a headline or listen to a blurb. The stunning part is just the fact that we live in an era with so much actual footage but folks look away the same as they do with homeless folks.

@futurebird I'm glad you're having this experience.Part of why I schedule my writing around a quarter system with breaks is that it builds in lulls that last long enough for me to "forget" and return with new eyes. It weirdly helps with all the troubleshooting that feels impossible if I write without breaks.I think folks have different tolerance for on time vs off time creatively but it does seem like breaks are a healthy part of the process.
