Book 21 was Everyone In This Room Will Someday Be Dead by Emily Austin. This was a weird one. It’s not genre fiction but it’s not literary fiction. It’s deeply sad but darkly hilarious. The pace is rapid but nothing much happens.Review: https://app.thestorygraph.com/reviews/8f7274f1-c1c5-49e7-a16d-c1d65ad1979c@bookstodon @lgbtqbookstodon

Book 22 was The Narrative of Sojourner Truth by Sojourner Truth. It’s always tough to read such horrors. I genuinely don’t know whether it makes it harder or easier when they’re presented in just casual, paired-back tone. Definitely worth a read. Book 25 was The Retirement Plan by Sue Hincenbergs.I read a lot of books about women who kill. A lot. They broadly fall into one of two categories: those who kill evil men and those who kill anyone who annoys them. This one makes out it’s the former but really it’s the latter. @futurebird His uncle… Wouldn’t that be Mary’s father? You’d think he’d want to avoid any mention of that side of the family.

New month, new book thread…My first read for August was I'll Never Tell by Philippa East.Flawed but fundamentally decent characters just trying to do their best. A messed-up situation. Secrets and lies aplenty. And the dog lives. Review: https://app.thestorygraph.com/reviews/ee6f5bd5-6c9b-407e-852a-c14d398884b7?redirect=true

Book 3 was Royals and Ruses by S. Usher Evans.I have enjoyed this cosy fantasy series so much. It's rare that I read this many books in a series. But this is just so good.Get it from the author: https://www.sgr-pub.com/product-category/the-weary-dragon-inn/royals/@bookstodon @lgbtqbookstodon

Book 4 was Downbelow Station by C.J. Cherryh.Let’s say you drew a linear spectrum of space opera with character-driven at one end and plot-driven at the other. At one end, The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. At the other end, this book. Review: https://app.thestorygraph.com/reviews/c07ffb82-0dcc-4373-a1aa-b0a697efb3c4@bookstodon @lgbtqbookstodon

Book 6 was Gender Swapped Greek Myths by Karrie Fransman & Jonathan Plackett. The most interesting part for me was the afterword, wherein the authors talk about why they created this. They’re absolutely right: gender-swapping absolutely highlights the toxic masculinity and the inequality.Review: https://app.thestorygraph.com/reviews/8cb96f10-9fba-413b-8ee2-e694d58a5cca@bookstodon

Book 8 was Patriot: A Memoir by Alexei Navalny. The first half of this book is filled with hope. Navalny talks about how much he loves his country. The second half is composed of his prison diaries and he gets angrier and more frustrated.Review: https://app.thestorygraph.com/reviews/faa755a8-0b09-4f35-89d4-72462761481e@bookstodon

@futurebird Yeah, to be honest, I also think there’s a vast difference between countries that are treating the US as an ally and countries Iran would treat as allies of the US.
