Quite honestly, for EVERY social problem we face, some people knew and were loudly saying "Watch out: this is what is very likely to happen!!". ANNND, the real reason the issue even became a problem is because too many people 1) never heard them,** 2) were encouraged to ignore them,** or 3) felt threatened and even helped to drown out the words.** But like in every horror movie, plenty in the audience WERE saying "Don't open that door!" ** social inequities CREATE these possibilities

These toxic as hell overpaid political consultants who have given democracy in the US so many losses over the past few decades keep insisting Dems move to some imaginary middle. Never mind that clear majorities -majorities, not pluralities- of ALL US people want STANDARD PROGRESSIVE policies like universal healthcare (about 60%), a living minimum wage (80+%), better climate change legislation , tougher laws against corruption, clean air and water (etc etc)This has been true for years.

yet corporate entities that largely control what is considered mainstream "news" never seem to frame it - that- way.It's obvious to millions of us. But it's not to millions more.To varying degrees those millions ARE content to watch whatever (carefully marketed) swill is served up to them. I'm not talking RWNJs, I'm talking about "minimally engaged" types who remain impressively unaware of how they are being manipulated, used, lied to etc. Folks who typically -don't- analyze stuff.

they exist in greater numbers than would be ideal, partially because they are busy struggling to make ends meet and just keeping their heads above water. But if men -especially- are encouraged to become more compassionate, caring, and emotionally self aware, donny and his toxic brigade of abusive folks WOULD BE far less appealing.This is a basic observation, but it works. @Nonilex fun facts about Victor Hugo: he had to live in exile from France for several years, for his LW politics. He was hugely popular and according to his museum 2 million people - showed up to mourn the loss of him- the largest French funeral ever.. instead law schools accepted incredible amounts of money from the likes of Koch Industries and other RWNJs -and quietly changed their curriculums- to teach in ways that were more favorable to crapitalists (really, see Jane Mayer).Imagine medical schools turning out "top" doctors that create policies that -cause- suffering for people. Along with the quietly intentional siphoning of money, MANY lawyers and judges have long helped to keep a dangerously uneven playing field intact so certain demographics retain advantages, and other folks are trampled underfoot, and turn on each other to fight for scraps.Yes law schools produce human rights lawyers (thankfully), but those same schools also graduate tons of obvious ghouls that work in such ways that the very habitability of the planet is in peril, What a field.

@futurebird I think differences in how people deal with with perceived authority ALSO plays a part in the -ease- by which these propaganda and advertising campaigns work on some folks, and not others.People on the left -tend to- look at information and do our own smell tests…IOW: internally think to ourselves: does this make sense?People on the right -tend to- look at who said it- a wealthy white male christian? they then "think" it's probably true.IMO: it's not a trivial difference

@interfluidity some really good stuff here and there, but overall, bad due to -what- info was "allowed"*…I watched them pretty regularly for a while, despite always being somewhat uneasy that they were sponsored by rolex, and more so once the "in crowd" factor picked up. *I had an account and made a few comments on talks I liked, but my account mysteriously got really hard frozen… In hindsight it was most likely after I questioned the need for bloated US defense budgets. Sighs.

@futurebird @luckytran My distance blurred, but educated guess: It's probably real denial.Alcoholics can add numbers, obey laws, but still believe they have no problem with alcohol, despite 4 DUIs and two divorces. Denial is what the D in DARVO stands for.Using some variations of DARVO appears to be almost necessary to authoritarianism/dominating over people.My guess is he's so far gone he can probably even tell himself he's being heroic. ex: Dear leader spews DARVO all day long.
