Are there any ebook readers (ideally using e-ink for that paper-like feel) that aren't tied to any big corporation? I'd like to get one but my library are PDFs and EPUBs read through Calibre, not some Amazon account or whatever.

@fristi Yup, I can't find the exact timestamp, but I'm 99.9% sure this is The Three Kingdoms, a 2010 Chinese TV show. You can find it with English subtitles on YouTube.

Why does literature not intended for children almost never have illustrations? I read The BFG, full-page illustrations every 10 pages. I read War and Peace, 1200 pages and not a single illustration in sight.

@anjum And also because 99% of it is interest in Mastodon specifically, not Fediverse. I've not seen it billed as a free software alternative to big social media networks, but as Gargron's protest against Twitter or something.

@hideki It's especially annoying due to the sheer amount of content an AI generator can put out. They just need a few prompts, a few runs, and there's a hundred images ready to go. Even more prolific artists will manage maybe 5 proper pieces a week. So a small amount of AI posters can share as much as a massive amount of real artists.

@thor Playing devil's advocate, the metric system isn't flawless either. For one, why is it called a Tonne and not a Gigagram, if we're using prefixes everywhere else?Also, Celsius is the one defined around freezing/boiling water. And what's it even mean that "logical scaleat which zero is the base level"? What's a base level? Sounds more like Kelvin to me.

@maryjane Gargon is partially to blame, because if you look at the marketing for Mastodon (by that I mean the official website) then it barely mentions that Mastodon is part of the larger Fediverse. Contrast that with, for example, Pleroma's landing page.But a lot of blame is to be put on journalists who can't seem to wrap their heads around the concept. But then again, Mastodon is the one getting the most new users, so in a sense it really is Mastodon specifically that's the hot new thing.

@maryjane Addendum to this, while I partially blame Gargon, I don't attribute it to malice. I suspect it's just a matter of making the service seem as simple as possible on the outside, to attract outsiders. A lot of people apparently have trouble understanding Mastodon even before hearing about the many other services that can integrate with it. It's a sort of "dumbing down" necessary to make the product appeal more to mainstream folk.

@deviantollam Wait, is there some unspoken rule that one is supposed to follow back? I never really used social media before Fedi, and when I get a follow I just react with "oh okay" and an occasional "better check that its not a bot from some weird instance".
