Trump has renamed the ‘Department of Defence’ the Department for War’. At least that’s honest I suppose but I can’t help feeling he should do the same for the other big federal departments. We have a similar problem with euphemistic naming of ministries in the UK. The Department of Health should really be the Department for Ill Health and Misery. The Home Office should be the Department for Policing and Duffing Up the Masses. The DoE should be the Department for Constant Meddling with Schools.

The Foreign Office is really the Department for Continuing War with Foreigners by Other Means. And the DWP is really the Department for Domestic Warfare on Poor and Disabled People. In fact — thinking about it — they’re mostly departments for war of some form or another.

I’ve just been looking at a rather fun-looking long distance electric bus service covering (so far) the north half of Scotland. To use it you select the route you want on the web site and pay in advance. The bus only stops at the designated stops where people have said they want to get on or off. You need to book at least 10 minutes beforehand. The fares look very reasonable and the bus is QUIET! The service is at https://www.ember.to and the picture here is from a live tracker of all buses

The hope is of course that they progressively extend their coverage further and. I would combine it with other means of transport such as ‘bus there, train back’. I quite fancy the alternatives to always driving.

Today I learned that there are only three English cities with an electrical consumption greater than 200 megawatts: London, Manchester and Birmingham. By comparison, the people who want to build AI data centres here, which nobody asked for, want a supply of up to 1 gigawatt (1,000 megawatts) for each one. That’s how skewed this whole nonsense is.

Tomorrow will be one whole calendar month since I deleted my ‘BBC ID’ and all their apps from my devices: iPlayer, Sounds and News. Do I miss the right wing captured state broadcaster? Nah. I’m still well informed but less frustrated by bias passing as ‘balance’.

The weirdest excavator I’ve ever seen! I think they’re referred to as spiders and they can lift each leg independently and widen or narrow their track whilst the cabin does a full 360. There must be a temptation for the driver to play all day. One was in action this week, clambering down into the bed of the breached Llangollen Canal to help dig out narrowboats that had been washed into the void.
