I've just discovered https://www.map.signalbox.io/ which shows the real-time position of every train on the British mainland. It will make me a much less anxious traveller next time I'm waiting for a train!

Event organisers: a question "do you need any accessibility adjustments" is almost useless without a statement of what you're already planning on doing. You're asking attendees to compare their needs with how they think events are conventionally run, which might not match what you're planning.

(and providing an accessibility statement is both useful to prospective attendees, and shows that you've actually put some thought into accessibility and aren't just asking disabled attendees to do the work for you)

My employer wants 300 voluntary redundancies across the board, which will become less voluntary if enough people don't volunteer. The union rep for my school has just sent an email out saying that for us that means 10 academics and 5 support staff will go.My response:

A very satisfying bit of mathstodon.xyz server admin: after moving the main server from Vultr to OVH a few days ago, I've just moved our most expensive sidekiq server as well. Was £74/month on Vultr, same specs on OVH is £14/month.Feels good!

I got thoroughly nerdsniped by seeing @futurebird writing code to render Cuneiform numerals, and I've ended up writing a page that renders numbers in as many different systems as I could think of:https://numeral-conversion.think.somethingorotherwhatever.com/I've probably made rookie mistakes in most of them, so if you spot something wrong, please tell me!

Is there a shell or a terminal emulator that groups the lines produced by each command, so I can quickly scroll back up to two commands ago after the last command produced a hundred screens of nonsense?

I had an interesting question on colour filter overlays from a librarian today. A dyslexic student wants to read some original documents, not scans or reproductions, and they'd like to put some colour filter overlays on them. The librarians are concerned that the documents might get damaged. They want to know if a hand-held colour filter, or something on the light source, would work just as well.I don't know much about the science of colour filters for dyslexia except I've heard the data on efficacy is mixed, but assuming we want this to happen: is there any strong reason to have the colour filter directly on the document?I don't know any hashtags that archives people would be watching, so please recommend one if you know one!#accessibility #dyslexia

Is there a public list of certificates granted by Let's Encrypt? Seconds after using certbot to get a certificate on a new domain, which hasn't been linked to from anywhere, I saw requests to URLs like "/.env" and "/.git/config", and I can't think how else someone would think of trying them.
