the city and county of San Francisco is running a handful of job fairs soon, including one tomorrow. there are tons of government vacancies right now. could be a good opportunity to find something interesting if you’re looking for a new gig, and to do meaningful work where you live info here (no public site I could find, unfortunately): https://www.instagram.com/p/C1p1VtCrgpZ/?igsh=ZDE1MWVjZGVmZQ==email rpd_recruitment@sfgov.org for more info

learning to sew:come for the promise of making a thing you want, stay for the highly specific opinions you are forced to quickly develop about things you never previously noticed

what's germinated in the beds since I left for sacramento on monday:- kailaan (chinese broccoli)- borage- tarragon- sugar daddy snap peas (seriously)- leeks- scallions- garliccitrus is also popping off - lots of lemons and limes weighing down the tiny branches on tiny trees in containers.I installed drip irrigation last weekend but have only had to use it once. lots of rain this week, and continuing through the weekend

next saturday we'll probably be planting some seeds at garden for the environment as we turn over some of the beds. will be fun to see how things grow in my beds (inner richmond) vs across the park (inner sunset)

trellised the snap peas, harvested first radishes (that we didn’t intentionally plant - think there was a seed mixup, but a happy one), gailaan and potatoes are growing fast, tooinside I started a couple of varieties of cherry tomatoes (sungold, chocolate cherries, yellow patio choice) and tried propagating some rosemary and ceanothus cuttings! going to get some more natives going also starting on compost pile. already keep worms, but going to build some bins soon

it’s been about a month since last post! lots of growthI harvested all of the radishes, came out really well! tender and peppery.peas are growing fast but no fruit yetI bought a few tomatoes from clement farmers market bc my seeds inside are moving too slow (and piglet tossed over tray yesterday so glad I did). marigolds tooI need to start leaf mulching more bc days are getting hotter here and we’ve left our rainy season

our stone fruit tree seems to have gotten peach leaf curl. a bunch of the leaves on the peach-ish grafts look like fritos. I guess there’s nothing to be done about it once it appears (fungus that overwinters in bark) so we’ll just have to see how it impacts the tree

I’ve tried to plant more natives and drought tolerant beneficials outside the beds. this is probably the best these flowering areas will look since I don’t water them otherwise, and they’re lush from the winter rains. looking forward to establishing some bigger natives during next years wet season. I started too late this year but am still gonna try to get a few going because I went to Flowercraft and couldn’t resist getting a ceanothus when they’re in bloom everywhere

my copy of the new back to basics: a guide to ecological photo chemistry just arrived yesterday in the mail (from UK, irony not lost on me). really excited to dig in!!there's a digital copy available in their shop: https://sustainabledarkroom.com/products/back-to-basics-digitalalso, for folks interested in this sort of thing in the bay area, east bay photo collective periodically has been doing plant developer workshops (I haven't been able to make it to one yet, but I want to!): https://www.ebpco.org/events/film-processing-with-plants

I've been concerned about the ecological impacts of film photography and darkroom processes for a bit, but recently have started worrying a bit more about chemical toxicity due to some health impacts a friend who does wetplate photography has experienced. scary stuff. modern darkroom chemistry is less toxic than wetplate chemistry, but still can have negative impacts on health longterm. I'm considering starting to use gloves when developing my film.

I also kind of wish HMPC wouldn't do wet plate collodion classes, especially because they mention nothing about bringing or providing PPE in the workshop descriptions.
