1/3While the #fediverse is great, the ephemeral nature of it is does not give a sense of content stability (IMO).Integrating websites may provide a way to add long form value and future availability whilst offloading even more content and data from the privacy-invasive commercial tech giants over the long term. #datasovereignty #privacy #techgiantHere is a topic I want to tear into in the coming week or so:https://maho.dev/2024/02/bringing-your-site-to-the-fediverse-a-practical-guide-for-static-sites-part-1/

@BrodieOnLinux FVWM is/was great. I started using more or less when it started and I've been used it as recently as 2022 on some custom embedded "carputer" type devices. Totally themeable/strippable/placeable.Would like to see a #wayland version but... probably won't happen.#fvwm #funtimes

@BrodieOnLinux I remember all this stuff going on back in the day. We were running #Gentoo in production at a research facility at the time and it was, umm, interesting, as the quality of the portage tree was very uneven during this time. Directly related, maybe... maybe not. Shenanigans certainly didn't help I'd expect. We moved to #Centos in ~2008 IIRC. We were #Redhat before Gentoo so it was a 'comfy old shoes' move.

@neil Agree. Use a stable distro with "no" corporate entanglements ( #Debian ?) and get on with it. An argument could be made for #FreeBSD as well.Creating a new distro at the public level is megaproject level stuff. It's a megaproject leveraging what already exists!

@BrodieOnLinux In fairness, might be the holiday lull that has reduced the number of commits lately.

@cjd Given your requirements I would suggest Debian stable with either Gnome or KDE as your desktop environment. Of those, Gnome is marginally more polished and stable. Running Debian stable for the base OS while using flatpak apps for everything front end will provide a good experience. If you need a more current version of Gnome or KDE then you would need to investigate Debian testing. I don't really see a need for it but it's there if needed. FWIW, I run PopOS as my front end opsys and run Debian on servers. Pop is 22.04 based LTS so getting a little dated but there is nothing that I've encountered that is an issue. Again, flatpak for the most current front end apps.HTH

Today I relaunched my nerdy computer blog. Still some tuning to do and I'm not sure why the 404 page doesn't work properly once uploaded to the live site. It's after midnight here - sounds like a problem for 'Future Chris'. Ha.https://moose.ca#Linux #homelab #floss #foss

F/LOSS supply chains...Anyone 'curious' about it these days?Differences in the way Linux and FreeBSD operate? Differences in the large stakeholders associated with each project?Differences in where critical infrastructure is located?Thoughts?#FOSS #FLOSS #Linux #FreeBSD #SupplyChain #HomeLab #SOHO #Hosting #Infrastructure #web

@BrodieOnLinux I think using a hard 'g" is part of the 'lame joke' about the naming. Whether it is correct or not is irrelevant and probably doesn't matter. With context, calling it out one way or the other is not useful IMO.

@meatlotion You make good points. The only reason to go through this effort is to change the license of Ubuntu. The goal is to remove as much GPL code as possible so that there are no limitations on what Ubuntu can be used for and by whom for what purpose. At least that is my theory.

@meatlotion @rms Anything MIT or BSD licensed can be incorporated into closed source code without full disclosure - that is my understanding. Is that bad? No, otherwise the code wouldn't have been licensed that way.Ubuntu is writing their own user space "from scratch" and not using existing GPL code AFAIK. It will likely have the same/similar commands and same interfaces as what exists in the GNU tools today or it'll be ths same as in FreeBSD (BSD licensed IIRC) or it'll be a variant similar to both. Who owns the IP to unix-like user space commands? Does 'ls' or the *nix style file system layout have or merit a patent? At this point...

@stefano It depends...When doing CAD/creative type stuff one screen is the 3D render, the other is the work space. When DevOops'ing, typically one is dev/pre-prod and the other is prod. This way I'm less likely to make 'wrong terminal' mistakes. Sometimes looks more like a coding session below, depending...When just messing around or doing general reseearch or continuing ed. one is browser sessions, terminals, etc. while the other is email/social.When coding one is docs/web pages while the other is the actual coding session.I don't regret having two screens.HTH

@BrodieOnLinux It's actually Kdolphin but the K is silent. That other desktop can't hog all the linguistic novelty.
