I will be moving mastodon.mihalis.net to a Mac mini with M2 Pro chip just as soon as apple can send me a 32GB/2TB build to order unit. Current hardware has crashed several times in a week and it turns out that's not very good for a database backed web site.

Hey Mastodon home/self hosters, how much machine do you really need? I spun up my trial mastodon instance just under a year on an old trashcan Mac Pro. It was easy to allow 32GB RAM and 6 cores, so I don't think I've hit any limits, however that machine is old and tired and started crashing last week.Currently hosting just two active users, both following plenty, but only one (me) posting much.Might go apple silicon, but ... how big a machine? searchable: Y, elastic search : Y

Four restored James Cameron movies hit streaming services in 4K recently. Titanic (don't care), True Lies (don't much care), Aliens (not a huge difference honestly) and The Abyss! The latter movie was previously only available in a pretty bad DVD and is now in glorious state of the art 4K UHD. It's like the old one was a TV production and now it looks like a real movie, as it should. It now looks like I remember seeing in the Leicester Square Odeon theater, London, 1989. Stunning.

Did my taxes. Call me a slow learner, but I only recently realized that such chores have a fixed and variable parts to the pain. The fixed is doing the work, you can’t avoid it. The variable is the having it hang over you. You can reduce the variable part to almost zero, JFDI
