periodic reminder that we run a matrix instance at https://matrix.cybre.space/matrix is a modern (federated!) chat protocol with all the bells and whistles -- look for Riot in your favorite app repository / marketplace for a slick client that can connect to any matrix serveror you can use it on the web directly at https://matrix.cybre.space/(join #meta:cybre.space if you're interested in discussion and updates about this instance and our matrix server)

cybre.space users: general reminder, please don't post screenshots of posts from users on other instances. mastodon doesn't have quote-posts for a reason.

looking for an active moderator for cybre.space willing to: - triage reports - proactively curate federation policies (e.g. suspend new alt-right instances that arise) - perform conflict mediation - engage with community members one-on-one to resolve disputes with other usersyou should ideally have familiarity with the mastodon/fediverse community as a whole and with cybre.space's community in particular (if you are not a cybre.space user, it's probably good if we've interacted before this)this is paid part-time work (small number of hours per week). compensation will be at least seattle minimum hourly wage ($15/hr).please DM if interested. i may take some time to reply so thank you for your patience.

netdata on the cybrespace matrix server has been reporting the following alarm at a steadily increasing rate over the last couple months: ip.tcp_accept_queue, "the average number of times the TCP accept queue of the kernel overflown, during the last minute"this seems like the symptom of another problem, but i can't find much information about what it might be a symptom *of* (other than, possibly, a slow application not accepting connections fast enough).can anyone advise? what should i be looking for to further diagnose the cause? what, if anything, could i do to mitigate this at the system level?

working with linux servers has taught me that the internet is just a bunch of barely working shell scripts yelling at each other at all times

just gonna leave this sql query here in case anyone else needs to work around the moderation interface's lack of ability to answer the question "who here follows who on that instance" SELECT a1.username, a2.username FROM follows JOIN accounts a1 ON a1.id=target_account_id JOIN accounts a2 ON a2.id=account_id WHERE a1.domain='example.com';

just fixed an issue with cybre.space's sidekiq worker that was causing it to frequently (30-60s) restart, interrupting longer-running tasks and possibly causing posts to get lost from feeds. hopefully things should be a bit more stable now

if you run mastodon on ubuntu or debian with jemalloc and you notice sidekiq crashing frequently, it may be related to this issue with FFI: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/15751the fix in our case was to add LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libjemalloc.so to the systemd unit files, so that all native (non-ruby) code could use the same memory allocation system

for a lot of reasons, both personal and practical, i don't think i can effectively run a public mastodon instance any more, and i need to retire cybre.space. i want to do this responsibly and make sure everyone has a chance to migrate and export properly, so here is the plan for the instance retirement (feel free to share this link around): https://cybre.space/~chr/cybre-space-eoldue to ongoing moderation load issues and understaffing, between now and 1 november, the instance may be undermoderated. for other instances, if this poses an issue for you, i encourage you to use federation tools at your discretion. i would only ask that you be clear and public about your decisions so that cybre.space users can figure out where they will be able to migrate their accounts.thank you

some users have had issues exporting their account backup archives, so to make sure i can communicate with users until all issues are resolved i will be delaying the read-only phase of the cybre.space end of life to january 1st, 2023. (also because there's a lot going on in my life right now and i want to make sure i can respond promptly to issues that might arise)to be clear: you will still be able to export backups after the site goes read only. i just want to make sure people have a way to reach me if they encounter problems.
