@stux In all honesty, .webp is a great invention in its own right. If you just objectively look at things like compression, filesize, features (transparency) etc. it's just a great blend of other things. #PNG s have transparently but they take up a huge amount of space whereas #JPG s can't handle transparency and their quality can deteriorate easily (depending on the settings, of course).I'd just wish for a greater adoption of support for #WEBP since it's been around for like 12 years now...

@stux I thing there used to be a similar uproar against formats like #MKV and #WEBM at some point as well but I believe those are nowadays not as disliked. I mean #MP4, #MP3 are great and all, but there are other great #formats as well for #audio and #video 😸

What's your favorite #Linux #DesktopEnvironment? :archlinux: :debian: :ubuntu: :fedora: :manjaro: :linuxmint: :linux: :gnu: 🚨 Mastodon restricts the poll to only 4 choices so I had to go with the 3 most popular ones (#Gnome, #KDE and #Xfce) and save that last slot for others (Cinnamon, MATE, LXQt, Budgie, Unity and so on and so on). 🚨 #GNULinux #GNU #Ubuntu #UbuntuLinux #Fedora #FedoraLinux #ArchLinux #Manjaro #LinuxMint #Debian(sorry, had to throw in some tags for visibility's sake)

@atomicpoet I've noticed the exact same when it comes to US-owned instant messaging clients. The media is sure to mention WhatsApp and Signal everywhere but hardly any mentions of Telegram. And if they do mention Telegram you can bet they will emphasize the word "Russian" even tho' it isn't. The founder is... and doesn't live there anymore. They will also emphasize "not end-to-end encrypted" but fail to mention that it has CLOUD SYNC and it's still secure. People use Discord without E2EE...

@atomicpoet I think it's far worse not to have cloudsync or usernames (to hide your phone number in group chats) than the lack of E2EE as a default.#Telegram DOES offer E2EE with Secret Chats but the media is foaming about it not being the default. It's by design! The vast majority wants the feature set like all your photos, files etc. listed all the way back till 2016. And filesize limits that are modern like 1--2GB files if you want to send a HD clip without compression. The media hates TG

As much as people despise #Snaps in #Ubuntu and lament their slow start-up speed, I disagree. I have an old cheap laptop and while not blazing fast, I feel as if #Firefox launches relatively quickly. I didn't time it but didn't feel like it's taking forever and it's just good that the apps stay updated and there's no messing with dependencies. And I hear you, coming out of the woodworks: "But what about #Flakpak?!"Listen. Snaps have their own benefits (especially on the server).#Linux

@asahi95 IKR? Lots of people avoid it like the plague and jump through hoops to purge snapd on their machines. I just think it's silly. And it's pointless to go into the "which is better: Flatpak or Snap?" debate since both have their usecases and pros and cons. Canonical has made Snaps and they run great on servers (while Flatpaks don't) so it just makes sense to go "all-in" in improving them even further. There's room for more than one format just as before (rpm, deb, appimage etc.)...

It just doesn't make a lot of sense in terms of clarity to have both in the Software Center and furthermore, didn't Snaps appear before #Flatpak? I'm sure #Canonical will keep improving #Snaps and to remain streamlined, it makes sense to use the same packaging format as on the server-side. Flatpaks don't run on servers iirc.I just think people are taking the thing a bit too harshly when it comes to #Ubuntu. Snaps have their benefits compared to traditional .deb packaging.

It took roughly 1 second to startup #Firefox (#Snap) on a cheap 550€ laptop I bought in 2017. People keep saying it takes 3 seconds. Either they've improved upon #Snaps tremendeously on #Ubuntu OR it's just a blatant lie OR they're using archaic hardware if mine is 5 years old by now and a budget laptop...Snaps are not that bad, folks... Don't worry about the "infamous startup times", they're exaggerated.

@thelinuxEXP How has the Software Center/Updater been working with apps? The reason I'm asking is because Ubuntu Software Center (which confusingly is just a shortcut that opens an app called the Snap Store) gives all kinds of errors when updating apps and never shows any information on them (just a text "Gathering information..").I'm beginning to think it's just an Ubuntu thing. Really annoying and far from a simple "just works" GUI solution since I'm constantly running terminal cmds now...

People need to realize that not everyone has a tin hat on their head and some compromises are just worth it.Sometimes a certain level of #security and #privacy is enough for most people.#Signal is yet again bombarding with the donation begging. I am not going to pay. Accept my answer and don't ask me again.#Telegram is secure enough for my needs and I'm frustrated with how little Signal provides compared to Telegram. Cloud-sync is the biggest one. And I know E2EE cancels it out. No deal!

Look. I like #Mastodon. Heck, I even prefer it over #Threads or #Bluesky. There's just one tiny problem. Mastodon didn't catch most of the public figures or media outlets. I don't exactly know why. The Washington Post is on Threads and Bluesky, yet it's not here. The same can be said about gaming studios and most tech journalists that I usually follow.I really wish Mastodon would've become the de-facto microblogging site but it seems it's coming in last place. Yet I prefer it.

With #Threads I get it that they leveraged their already massive #Instagram and #Facebook userbase by crossposting stuff in their ecosystem. I get it. But how on Earth did #Bluesky just instantly gather a following and #Mastodon did not, even tho' Mastodon was mentioned numerous times on the media?! What am I missing here?

I mean I want to see posts from #Xbox's Sarah Bond or #TheVerge's Tom Warren... yet they aren't here. They are, however, on #Bluesky. Where did #Mastodon fall short? It's not as complex as people make it seem and ActivityPub is way more established as a standard compared to what Bluesky's using. And Mastodon is more feature-packed as well...
