If you're looking to host your very own single-user/a-few-users #fediverse instance, you cannot go wrong with #snac. It is simple to install on Ubuntu and works very well with some really solid clients. It is also written in C, so it is fast, with few dependencies. Great work @grunfink@comam.es, you've got a new monthly supporter on Ko-fi!#snac2 #ActivityPubhttps://codeberg.org/grunfink/snac2

It is endlessly amusing and frustrating to me how "people" (mostly billionaire speculators and their acolytes) keep talking about "building decentralized social media" when the #fediverse is already a very real and very active decentralized social media. The challenge is that it cannot be monetized to their advantage and its structure is inherently anti-authoritarian, which doesn't center their own, very personal vision. So they will critique it and sideline it, but it isn't going anywhere.

I've been running #snac on my small Ubuntu home server since May. It started out as an alternate account to my principal, but has now turned into my main presence in the #fediverse. On the desktop I use @phanpy@hachyderm.io and the web interface and on my phone and tablet, I run @Tusky@mastodon.social There are a few quirks here or there, but overall it works very well!@justine@bsd.cafe @stefano@bsd.cafe @grunfink@comam.es

Same here. 30 seconds of downtime. About the same as a system reboot now! Amazing. Thank you for your work on this @grunfink@comam.es!

I upgraded this #fediverse instance to version 2.61 of #snac. I stopped the daemon, backed up the data, updated the source code, compiled and installed program and then started deamon again. Total downtime was 54 seconds, mostly because I had to type out those commands by hand. My favorite #ActivityPub instance. Thank you for your work @grunfink@comam.es!

It is such a different experience from using the alternatives. I am sure it makes sense to have a fancy database, multiple front-ends and intricate configurations for big, multi-user instances, but for my use, this is perfect and it really allows me to have an actual portable #fediverse identity.CC: @grunfink@comam.es

Added offsite backup to my #snac update shell script. The script now stops the snac systemd service, archives the snac-data folder, fetches the latest source, compiles and installs it, restarts the service, and finally uses rclone to back up to #Proton Drive. Total downtime: 24 seconds.I am loving it. Very happy to have made this my primary #fedi instance. sanfranciscan.org is easier to maintain thanks to podman, but we are still talking about 10-15 minutes of downtime.#fediadmin #sysadmin

I fully believe #snac is the best and easiest way to run your single-user #fediverse instance. Drama-free, responsive software with few dependencies. No cookies, no Javascript, not much bullshit indeed. Thank you again @grunfink@comam.es, happy to support your work!

Some, mostly Republicans, have been organizing for an Article 5 Convention to rewrite the U.S. Constitution. At least 28 states have called for it already and I believe it is a top priority for the incoming administration. So yes, this too shall pass, but the following American Republic might be a whole lot worse depending on who controls the process.https://www.commoncause.org/work/stopping-a-dangerous-article-v-convention/

Even though I haven't been a programmer in 20 years, I'm stoked to still have the skills to solve little sysadmin issues that come up. It's not pretty, and I'm sure there are better ways of doing it, but if I can do it with some C code and a shell script, it's good enough for me.

I'm also glad I learned the value of commenting my code because some of my little hacks quietly chug along for years until an API breaks and if they weren't commented, I would be very confused.

I love being able to self-host my #fediverse instances. Autonomy for the win. Just need to make sure I update the server and back it up once in a while.

My mom (who lives in Mexico) asked me to request the baptismal certificates for me and my brother (who lives in Switzerland). I’m not Catholic, but it seemed like a simple enough favor, so I agreed. Our parish of baptism (in Tennessee) has the certificates, but they’re not annotated, so I had to contact the parish where we received our First Communion (in Canada) to get that sorted out. This has turned into an international ecumenical quest.

I haven't been spending much time online these past few months, which is great. It's also great that I can come back to the fediverse and not feel like I missed out on 1,001 things. It feels "normal". Like a virtual extension of real life, as opposed to a parallel reality that's algorithmically made to seem cooler.
