Sometimes an off-hand comment affects change. These netbooks were boxed up for our eWaste provider. Our project would get a small amount of money for these as eWaste. But thanks to a post by https://techhub.social/@governa@fosstodon.org they're now going to get Haiku and get repurposed. We normally put Xubuntu on everything, but it's a bit heavy for these. Haiku seems perfect for this purpose.

@donwatkins that's just crazy Don. As a refurbisher it makes me happy because I'm going to see more Macs come in, but it makes me sad to think about current Mac Intel users having to upgrade so soon...

@omgubuntu I thought part of the reason for the minimal ISO was a lot of people who were Network/PXE installing that use to use the mini.iso....???

@killyourfm Microsoft will buy Canonical, it's just a matter of time.

@killyourfm was working on a flappy bird-like game in Unity on Xubuntu. After getting everything all set up and about 20 minutes into the tutorial (which was about 2 hours after creating custom sprites in Aseprite), I had to sit in front of the tube and vegetate.

Today someone popped by the project and asked us to make 2 x USB keys with #MXLinux. Was really happy to create the keys. Even more happy that the person was relatively new to Linux, but showed enough enthusiasm to know what they wanted. We use #xubuntu at the project, but happy to help anyone as much as we can with general Linux stuff. As a bonus they donated $20 to the project. Not expected, but very appreciated.

@mjg59 @Migueldeicaza best moment of the movie was a quick shot of a GNOME desktop.

@mjg59 we were rolling our own Debian-based distribution for our computer refurbishing project from about 2001 to 2006. We switched to Ubuntu in 2006 because it was lightweight enough to run on the machines were building, and, most importantly, it made installing proprietary drivers easy (less work). When Canonical decided to switch to Unity, we switched to Xubuntu. (Unity wouldn't run on a lot of the laptops we were refurbishing in 2010). Still using Xubuntu today at our project.

@selea it's been ages since I've done anything serial, but I recall some of the other settings sometimes mattered too: 8N1, 7N1.. etc.

Almost the whole bed. Then I found a bunch of videos recommending organizational systems other than the honeycomb system.

Krita runs okay on this upgraded (16GB DDR3, 250GB SSD) Lenovo X220 tablet/laptop, however brushes are hard to switch because of the small screen real estate. Thinking this is better for something like Aseprite (via Steam) pixel art creation. Charging it up over the weekend, fingers crossed the battery is still okay. #refurbished #linux #linuxmint

Today was an awesome day at work. I managed to get a bit of time to completely year down this Lenovo X220 tablet, apply new thermal paste to the CPU, upgrade the RAM to 16GB DDR3, and replace the Seagate 500GB spinning rust drive with a 250GB WD Blue SSD. It's rocking Linux Mint 22.1 XFCE. Just finishing up by adding Krita, and some other software that might be useful on this neat machine. Have to pick up an eprom programmer some time so we can start flashing coreboot to some devices.

@matthew that's awesome to hear, thank you! What other upgrades/changes did you do? I enjoyed the process, the X220s are built well.

@internetarchive years ago I took a bunch of DV film of various talks at Ontario Linux Fest and uploaded the files to archive.org. The event hasn't happened in years, and while I still have the originals I'm glad to have this repo of digital history! #linux #floss
