@Gargron @mewmew @reitrace (narrator: Gargron is reminding us here that he ducks away from any responsibility over the actual infrastructure that he helped create, by taking refuge in the assertion that he is simply the custodian of one particular instance. note that he also pretends this one instance is a representative of the whole network, as necessary)

one gigantic defect of #Mastodon and, it seems, of ALL the #fediverse that I've sampled so far, is that it faithfully preserves an essential fallacy from corporate social media: it assumes that a user's posts, once they're made, belong NOT with the user, but with the server they happen to have chosen to light upon as a place to talk.oh, sure, they can "export" their data...using a mechanism that barely worksbut their posts now belong to some fossbro programmer or incompetent administrator

so while the #fediverse promises freedom of movement, much of this freedom is illusorythe situation is very much analogous to mediaeval "manorism", in which a person who wanted a place to live and to grow crops for their own sustenance was forced to ally themselves with some local lord and their "manor"under the manorial system, a person could _leave_ their lord and become a "free man" but they would have to leave EVERYTHING behind. to leave a manorial lord's care meant abandoning everything

and that's more or less what happens in the #fediverse when one moves from instance to instance. you have to leave everything behind. your posts are not yours; you have to leave them where they are. yes, you can retrieve copies...maybe. assuming the mechanism works, and assuming that you're even given the opportunity, because your data belongs in the dubious custody of the instance owners, who might simply have QUIT after all, putting your choice of neo-feudal manor out of business

the mere fact that this quasi-feudal way of doing things seems to be how the #fediverse functions, on a fundamental level, is almost enough to make me suggest that we should place ZERO trust and hope in this place.we need a true people's social network. is it _really_ gonna come out of...this?! this place where one doesn't even have safe ownership of one's own words?

@quaylessed self-hosting is equivalent to being a "freeman" in the feudal system

@randynose my own instincts tell me the following three things, at leastfirst, I don't think one can put any sort of long-term trust in a social medium in the custody of only one person. a minimum of three or four, I think, is needed to guarantee some stabilitysecond, the _conversation_, not the _user_, should be the fundamental unit of organization. I don't want to follow *individual people*, I want to follow *topics*.

@randynose and third, what a user has to say should belong to them, not to someone's server.
