@amolith +1 for maximum line width. I just hope that any redesign maintains wikipedia's noscript-friendliness.

@amolith When someone mentions "cinnamon" I think of the desktop environment before the spice.

@strypey @sirHe said "almost certainly" not "certainly," and he said "cryptocurrency" not "blockchain." Where's the baby in that?As for electricity, do you realize just how bad crypto is? It's not just using electricity to do a job like a PC normally does. It's intentionally wasting massive amounts of electricity. This is by design. "Proof of work" might be better referred to as "proof of wasted energy with a fancy GPU".https://digiconomist.net/bitcoin-energy-consumption

@strypey I see only two decent criticisms buried in there: (1) the lack of criticism of Netflix (When Tristan Harris speaks about the "attention economy" in other contexts he often brings up Netflix, but did not do so in th TSD), and (2) the lack of actionable solutions presented other than "put down your phone." But these shortcomings of the film don't invalidate its premise.

@sir Matrix-IRC clients should remove features that IRC clients don't have, so that Matrix users understand what IRC users see. Right now Matrix users expect:* me to be able to see messages they sent while I was offline* their "long message" to appear in the chatlog like an actual message rather than an annoying linkIt's almost like Matrix is trying to EEE other chat protocols.

@PINE64 What is the resolution of the PineCube? I don't see anything about that under specs.

@neauoire Yeah, and gemini correctly restricts publishers to providing content while leaving styling to the user agent. I hope that gemini gains enough traction to replace a subset of the web. But I also wonder how much of the existing web could be salvaged by resasserting the browser's role as a user agent, tossing out publisher-provided styling and navigation and re-solving those problems on the browser's side.

@strypey I looked into FLOSS dating software a while back and found https://github.com/pH7Software/pH7-Social-Dating-CMS. The source is GPL'd, so it could be run independently as a platform co-op, but I'm not aware of any specific examples of people doing so.

@zachdecook @sir 9front can, if you have a supported WiFi card, install the firmware, rebuild the kernel, and run the commands in `man wpa`.

@strypey news.1j.nz appears a black page with white text that says: "You need to enable JavaScript to run this app."

@strypey I see your logic. Note though that the actual JS on that site is not free. The code is obfuscated, with no link to the original source. There is also no free license attached making it "all rights reserved."https://news.1j.nz/static/js/2.8bdc76fa.chunk.jsIt's effectively a proprietary derivative of an MIT-licensed work, though if you can determine what minification scheme was used you may be able to verify that it is functionally the same as the free version.

@julienxx This looks great. My X230 running 9front has been sitting on a shelf for a few months because, while hacking on plan9 is fun in itself, I never reached a point where I could use it for any of my day-to-day tasks. I might dust it off for this.

@julienxx I know what you mean. I've been experimenting with different ways of separating tasks across devices to help create healthier boundaries in my computing (which translate into most of the boundaries I have in my life, since I'm doing most things via a computer these days). I'd like to work my X230+9front setup in there somehow. If I could find a graphical or mutt/aerc-like email client for plan9 I might make the X230 my device for non-work-related communication.

@dctrud Have you checked the speaker volume in alsamixer? WiFi is no surprise, but typically sound should work in Trisquel unless this is a very new computer.

@strypey @delta > the advantage of Delta Chat is that I can message anyone with an email address> Delta Chat is a totally different approach to UI from standard email apps, I can't see how a plugin to an existing email app would serve the purpose. This is something I've never understood about Delta Chat. If its usage patterns are so different from email that there is a need for a separate app, then what is the advantage of being compatible with email? Or to put it another way, if you

@strypey @delta consider email<->DC communication to be unpleasant from the email side, why would you expect the people that you email from DC to feel any differently?

@strypey If you've found any evidence of this, do you mind linking to it? As far as I can tell, this case is entirely about unregistered securities and poses no threat to any decentralized streaming platforms, including LBRY. Even LBRY seems to agree, as the FAQ says "The LBRY network is decentralized and not at risk... Even in an unlikely scenario in which LBRY Inc loses, the LBRY protocol will live on and work on it will continue."
