The #EarthOvershootDay has been announced to be August 22, more than three weeks later than last year due to the consequences of the #COVID19 pandemic: https://www.footprintnetwork.org/2020/06/05/press-release-june-2020-earth-overshoot-day/Reminder: the “Earth Overshoot Day” is pseudoscientific bullshit and should be treated as such. It basically only measures the #CO2 increase responsible for #ClimateChange. You can find more info on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_Overshoot_Day

@profoundlynerdy Thomas Paine's “Agrarian Justice” contains one of the many possible answers to your questions. He wasn't advocating for a full UBI, but his reasoning can be used to justify this kind of policy.Link: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Agrarian_Justice@kravietz

@xerz The goal of a citizens' initiative is precisely to push the Commission to do something that it wouldn't normally do.Of course the Commission can't force any member state to implement #BasicIncome, but it can study the question in depth and try to convince the member states. Having the Commission on our side would be a huge win even though it doesn't have the power to implement UBI itself.

@dump_stack I thought I had seen every argument against UBI over the years, but I don't remember seeing yours before. It's far-fetched and unconvincing, but original.

@dump_stack There aren't any factual statements in your first message, only controversial claims without any sources to back them up.I don't know much about work visas, but I doubt that there is a strong correlation between how generous a country's social safety nets are and how difficult it is to get a work visa.Your claim that UBI is a kind of socialism is also disputable.

@dump_stack Firstly, saying that something is only controversial for someone else is ridiculous. Controversiality isn't subjective, it's a factual assessment of whether disagreements exist or not. I disagree with your claims, therefore they are controversial.Secondly, as far as I know having a work visa typically doesn't entitle you to any social benefits in the country that delivered it, so your claim that an increase or broadening of social benefits can only result in a tightening of restrictions on work visas is dubious.

@dump_stack Firstly, you still haven't provided any source to back up your claim that there is a strict correlation between the amount of social benefits and the restrictions on immigration. Secondly, even if you prove that this correlation exists, it's not sufficient to justify your initial toot asking people not to support UBI, because work visa requirements are pretty much irrelevant to the UBI system if having citizenship is a requirement to benefit from it. Similarly, if a country is worried about “abuses” of its public healthcare insurance system by foreign nationals, then it can exclude them from it, and possibly force them to use a private insurance instead. In other words, restricting work visas is a political choice, not a necessity dictated by the existence of a public social security system.

@dump_stack Firstly, if you had read my message carefully you would have noticed that the sentence you've criticized starts with “as far as I know”, which means that I wasn't claiming that it was certain and backed by sources.Secondly, you haven't disproved my statement. You haven't provided any source that shows that some countries grant unemployment benefits to people who currently have a work visa, even though you should be able to easily find one if what you're claiming is true.Thirdly, you still haven't provided a source for your claim that more social benefits are always accompanied by more restrictions on visas. It's not to say “the source is immigration policies”. Your claim requires a serious scientific study of as many immigration policies as possible. The fact that you haven't provided any link to such a study leads me to the conclusion that your claims are most likely based only your personal experiences and biases, not on science. Finally, citizenship requirements aren't a significant barrier to migration, so why are you implying that they're a problem?
