@lain The difference, as far as I see it, briefly:Telegram is not E2E user-to-user by default. Unless you use secret chats, your msgs stay on their cloud. This allows for a smooth multi-device experience at the cost of potential privacy loss. Server code is not open-source.Whatsapp nowadays (it was not like that in the beginning) uses an E2E protocol delivered by the guys of Signal. There are, however, some particular cases where PFS is broken by a workaround that was implemented to easy the pain of re-trusting a contact who has changed his phone or has re-installed the app. It was reported also by the Guardian, that this could be used as a backdoor (actually, it can be exploited by a targeted MITM attack leveraging on spoofing of mobile network cells) but the guys of Signal have responded that what the Guardian sees as a potential risk is in reality a well-pondered compromise between usability and security and that the word backdoor is totally out of place.Apart from this, Whatsapp is part of FB and all the contacts metadata will now be used for FB’s purposes: technically, this could have already happened, but the difference now is that it is being made OFFICIAL.Signal is totally open-source and does not collect any metadata apart from the phone number, which is used to notify your contacts that a message is waiting for them. At least, this is what they claim (I have never digged into the code). It was co-founded by one of the co-founders of WA because he was not happy when FB acquired it, so Signal’s birth is all about “a fair start”…I would say, Signal is right now the best choice of the three.A better choice could maybe be the Swiss Threema (which is also the only one to be GDPR-certified), but is still centralised (and is not free, although for private users costs just 3.50€ una-tantum). Threema could be used WITHOUT using the phone number or an email: in that case, the user has to fill in his contact list manually, using the IDs of his contacts (generated when they registered). In this case Threema would be a totally anonymous solution. But the remaining problem with all of these apps is that they are centralised. And for most of the user this means nothing from the point of view of security & privacy, it does instead from the point of view of resilience: look at what is happening to Signal right now :) Centralised systems suffer from DDoS when they are not properly balanced and there are too many users, exactly what Signal is experiencing right in this moment. Distributed systems instead the more the instances the better they work!

@lain for less than 95K€ I don’t even lift my finger to click on “delete message”.but wait… RUBY? if it’s a flourishing company, then let’s keep an eye on them, maybe they make it and become the new twitter and then after 3 years they can’t scale anymore and that’s when we intervene and rewrite everything in - say - Rust and resell it and make tons of money.

Hi Fediverse! A friend of mine is resuscitating an old Vic-20 and needs to reprogram some PROMs (2332 and 2364), but he does not have the adequate hardware. He’s thinking of replacing them with more modern ones, like 27c32 and 27c64, which he can indeed flash. He could find on the Internet some adaptors for the 2364, but not for the 2332.Anyone could help him with finding a solution to adapt the 27c32 to the socket for 2332?Thanks a lot for your help! Please share this if you can :-*#retrocomputing #vic20 @lain @GustavinoBevilacqua

@mte90 @informapirata CIoè non che siano cattiviuna volta sulla manpage di nonmiricordoqualesotware c’era un bellissimo esplicito riferimento ad una presa di posizione di GNU che rendeva macchinoso, su alcune distribuzioni (leggi: Debian!), far andare d’accordo quel software col resto della distribuzione.il commento (sulla manpage!) era:“GNU guys are not evil, they are just badly driven”…

@antanicus i don’t agree with the avg. which samples of which populations do less than 3hrs of effective work?I always work overtime and I actually do effective work.but maybe it’s because I’m a technical profile, not an asset manager.

@lain how can this "local_only" status be used? How can one prevent a "local" message to be made visible to other federated instances, even if a user of such instances "follows" the user of the local post?@penguyman @loweel
