Also trying to figure out how to do a blockquote in an #ACM #Latex document. The problem with the word template was apparently that they wanted a one column form rather than two column. So I could download the right template and then cut and paste everything over, clearing formatting and then re-entering it, but it still might choke because of course, i don't have word.

Fellow creatives / researchers/ academics and people who do work that involves a lot of thinking or writing:Right now, I have a bunch of ideas, but when it comes time to actually work on them, I just feel a wave of exhaustion and end up playing inane computer games for hours. I know there are Reasons(tm) a lot of people feel burned out or low energy right now, but what I'd like to know is how people are dealing with it?Are y'all just going with it - taking breaks, holidays, cutting back?Trying to force yourself through it? (How?)Some other, better approach I can't think of?I'm very eager to hear what others are getting up to and how (or if) they're getting to work. Hopefully this might turn into a resource for others in the same boat. (I think it might be a big boat.)

@nebunez Hey, thanks for sharing! What are you using pipewire for? I saw that it's meant to be able to replace jack and pulse. Are you doing either of those things?

You know what mastodon doesn't do? Intentionally get you riled up. "Rowling" is unlikely to trend here. No algorithm will decide you're sensitive to her and shove whatever awful thing she's done in your face.By being less in the minutia, you get a bigger picture, more of a perspective and a chance to think of politics through a wider lens with greater possibility.

#AMRO22 opening sessionDavide and Uschi are talking about the history and about @servus It has its roots in the FOSS movement. This years theme is Debug. How useful is this metaphor? It transforms weirdness into knowledge.

Marloes de Valk will now talk about pattern languages at #AMRO22 Ellen Ullman wrote about The Bug. What is bugging? Programming is the art of making bugs. The 1984 apple advert promising personal computer liberation from centralised computing but created greater corporate hegemony.Liberatory Technology, described by Bookchin imagined solar punk utopia. Its is anarchist decentralisation. It was a proposal for sustainable design. Can a network of words help show possibilities of sustainable computer technology? Pattern languages and keywords.A pattern is a recurring problem with reusable, variable solutions. One pattern is pools and streams. Natural water ways have often been hidden. But people like water. This idea was influential and lead to the invention of the wiki.Bugs can indicate sloppy design. Master plans for software would disempower communities, however. Piecemeal growth allows consultation. Keywords by Williams shows how words change meaning over time mirroring social change. Words have a multiplicity of meanings. This book is readable as a hypertext. Keywords for Radicals is a 2016 update.

Language is a way of organising society. Means of communication as means of production remains a useful insight. The Whole Earth catalogue was a 1970s utopian effort. It was about individualistic shopping. Small scale community feminist practice's is often ignored in favour of revolutionary change with a named leader. David vs Goliath activism undermines local efforts. "Bugs" in the social system do not crash it.

#AMRO22 Femme and Helen are presenting about bug reporting the apocalypse. They are Institute for Technology in the Public Interest.Public organisations are being technically reorganised, including things like healthcare and education. Their operations are moving into the cloud, being managed by large corporations. This could be different. How can we debug with love and joy at the centre? They have written love letters to debugging. Hope is weird. Bug reporting is disenheartening as it focusses on the broken and some will not be fixed. Bug reporting will not address the horror of cloud computing. Where do you file a bug when the system itself is the problem? Is the idea of repair a trap?(Queering a gitub timeline. Fighting for space in systems without repricocity.)Love is more than resistance.[A story about an elementary school switching to google and her failed attempt to intervene.]All communities have norms so we cannot be post-normative. New tools create new norms.Getting our data back will not solve all our problems.

Spending today thinking about teaching, apparently.I was in a brilliant workshop in #AMRO22, where we soldiered jacks to the terminals of hand-crank generators. They spin fast enough that they work as oscillators.I don' think I could squeeze that and the material about what is actually happening into a two hour slot.I feel like a more inspired teacher could just do nothing but fun workshops and still cover how to do resistor maths, somehow, implicitly in the workshop materials.

@textfiles If you want to get totally retro, I've got a #SuperCollider library that can convert MIDI files into physical fisher price music box disks (via #OpenScad a d a 3d printer). Those were those 1970s plastic disks that played things like Camptown Races.Find your favourite, cut it to length and give it to a child with retro toy technology: https://github.com/celesteh/FisherPriceRecords

British #university #students who are regularly skipping classes: can I ask you a few questions? Are you happy? Are you getting what you want from university?Do you see your absence as a barrier, as a reflection of a barrier, as ok, as a problem? Can you say more about this?Is there something missing from your classes that makes them unappealing? Or something there you wish wasn't?Is there anything your lecturers could change that would cause you to attend more often? Is there anything the administration could change? Is there anything in the wider world that, if changed, would increase your attendance?Boosts appreciated. I want to understand what's going on with the students that I don't see, but I can't ask them because I don't see them.

Looking for an android #PeerTube client that will just let me play the @eulerroom stream without logging in to anything.I was unable to get any of the ones listed on fdroid to do this, but perhaps this was a UI problem and not a functionality problem?
