@aynish @neauoire's recent work with cons cells ( https://merveilles.town/@neauoire/108324145853644712 ) seems to be heading in a lispy direction, to my extremely uninformed eye at leastHonestly there could already be high level languages for uxn. I have a bad habit of not checking the awesomeuxn list before I post 😣

Upgrading your computer because it can't handle 50+ browser tabs is like installing a swimming pool because your kitchen sink can't hold every dish you have. It's an extravagant, privileged solution to the wrong end of a problem.

@urusan I inherited some beautiful and well-used hand tools from an old neighbor, all in feet and inches, which makes them at least older than 1985 (Canada's transition to the metric system). As for things I got new, my cheap Casio digital watch is pushing 18 years old. Last year I jury-rigged a replacement strap, because the original had perished, and changed the battery for the first time. Still (metaphorically) ticking!

Just read this awesome blogpost by Bunnie Huang about his DIY hydroponics setup. https://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?p=6481 It's mostly focused on the nutrient solution (and is the best write up about that I've ever come across, practical and scientific at once), but also shows how dead-simple a setup can be. No microcontrollers, no growlights, no IoT nonsense, just two tubs, two pumps, and two float switches. 🌱

@ParadeGrotesque`pi`, a little utility for calculating pi to an arbitrary specified precision. I remember it being in the Debian repos. Always handy for quick and incredibly naive stress testing and benchmarking :)

TIL about the m4 macro processor (https://www.gnu.org/software/m4/manual/m4.html), which comes quietly, unobtrusively installed on any POSIX-supporting system."Beware that m4 may be dangerous for the health of compulsive programmers."I am upset that I've never heard of this before, and also upset that I have this dangerous new rabbithole to contend with.

@zens Some of my favorite assumptions:- the user's computer meets X spec- the user owns a computer- the user has exclusive access to an internet connected device- the user can receive out-of-band messages (sms, etc.)- the user will always be in a position to communicate both in and out of band at the same time- the user has power and an internet connection at all times- the application can use as much of the user's compute resources and communication bandwidth as it needs with no limits

@zens I realize these are not in the same vein of gender and identity as the rest of your awesome list, but I'm always bothered by the quiet classism I see in a lot of tech, and I think avoiding that is vital to true inclusiveness

@zens Some more bad assumptions, actually about identity this time:- there is no legitimate reason for multiple physical beings to share a single identity- there is no legitimate reason for a single physical being to have multiple identities- a user's identity can be validated by some official authority- the user can produce any piece of official documentation of their identity

I found this Blackberry Passport in the bin a while ago, and I was immediately taken with its unusual form factor. I mean, look how quirky and cute it is! I somehow got it charged and past the setup screen, but now I'm stuck, unable to install any new software on it, because, well, Blackberry. Does anyone know of any resources for app sideloading on BB10? So far all I have are dead links.#blackberry #sideloading #handheld #pda

@OpenComputeDesign Oh hey, I can answer some of these!A 3D printer is definitely a handy tool to have, but it's far from the wundermachine a lot of articles make it out to be.- The PLA filament I use is fairly strong, but does get brittle over time, especially under load or in a humid environment.- You can do a lot with simple sketches and extrude operations in freecad, which is fairly easy to learn imo.(1/2)

@OpenComputeDesign- PLA and PETG filaments have fairly inoffensive odours, but I've heard ABS really stinks. Sound is very variable, depending on what kind of printer you get and how fast you run it. Mine is quite loud, so I never run it overnight.- Filament is kind if expensive, but if you don't use much and seal it in its bag when not in use, a little can go a long way.Hope this helps :)(2/2)
