RT @bellachu10 A transportation system that requires cars to get around is economic albatross around the necks of ordinary, hard working people. It is the mandatory purchase of a polluting, time-sucking, dangerous, depreciating asset.RT @guydealershipThis isn't a shitcoin. This isn't a meme stock. This is the average monthly payment on a new car.

"Local officials in Allentown, Pa., for instance, are exploring a project to reimagine a series of one-way streets that were originally designed to get motorists to the downtown shopping district as quickly as possible — until that district shuttered its doors 25 years ago, leaving behind a dangerous maze of fast roads with little congestion to slow drivers down."https://usa.streetsblog.org/2023/08/21/how-a-new-program-is-helping-small-cities-transform-their-transportation-systems

RT @jme_pew Turns out “microplastics” isn’t descriptive enough. We should be panicking about *tire dust.*“Seventy-eight percent of ocean microplastics are synthetic tire rubber, according to a report by the Pew Charitable Trust.”https://e360.yale.edu/features/tire-pollution-toxic-chemicals

RT @kevin_degood With the demise of Hyperloop, let’s never forget the time in 1965 that LA County seriously considered picking up special buses with jet-powered, heavy-lift helicopters to carry them to LAX instead of just building a rail connection.

RT @mateosfo: In the United States you can get a $7500 tax credit to buy a $55,000 electric car but you can’t get a $7500 tax credit to rent a condo in a walkable neighborhood where you don’t need a car. And they call it “climate policy.”

Anniversary blog post from May 6, 2010: in 1983, Harvard student Jay Walder wrote a master's thesis on private express van service in Staten Island. At the time I wrote the post, he was CEO of the MTA.https://capntransit.blogspot.com/2010/05/but-what-does-jay-walder-think.html

@Lyle “Double-stacked freight traffic does not work well with catenaries, and part of our agreement with CSX includes that the tracks have to be interoperable, so they can run on our tracks for maintenance purposes,” McLaughlin said in a phone interview.American railroad executives say, "can't do." Following a blog post by @Alon #Amtrak is rerouting the Silver Star away from the Northeast Corridor and west to Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Chicago..They claim it's temporary, due to the closure of one of the East River Tunnels for maintenance. Still waiting to hear whether they're going to keep the Northeast Corridor schedule that connects to the Silver Star in DC.https://media.amtrak.com/2024/09/amtrak-launching-the-floridian-with-daily-service-between-chicago-and-miami/
