fun fact, you can apparently get around Twitter's Rate Limit by just setting your system clock ahead to a future day. This won't work for previous days though.Don't know when this will be fixd, and it's kinda thirdhand information so

Thinking about writing about Dark Patterns in Game Design.Do you know what a Dark Pattern is? It's when companies do shady things, like adding things to your cart, or making it hard to unsubscribe, or automatically paying for an extra month of subscription after your free trial ends...This sort of thing is pretty rampant in gaming, I usually just call it "FOMO stuff" but it comes in all kinds of forms, and I care a lot about game design being in the service of fun, not manipulation.

Really big popular example: The Fortnite Store. It's a storefront a lot of games have been using, and has a bunch of items that cycle every 8-24 hours. That's textbook FOMO-- if time is running out on a deal, you're going to be pressured into making a purchase decision that may be unwise!

Another example of a Dark Game Design Pattern: When a game's got, say, DLC weapons, present them as locked in the Loadout Selection menu, so that the player is constantly reminded of all the stuff that they should buy! That's why I quit Payday 2, but it's also in free to play games, including Warframe!

I've still had a hard time 100% deciding on what to actually write, which is why there hasn't really been any Cohost lately.I mentioned Dark Patterns, or Pacing, and the issue is, both of those are sorta motivated by complaints I have about video games sometimes. And, I don't want to make people feel bad about video games, or burned out by video games. I DO want a little input on one thing though: If you look at a lot of content, written or video, I want to know if there's anything you watch that covers potentially depressing topics, but manages to do it in a way that doesn't actually feel bad. I would like to study content like that, because I do have these opinions, and want to turn them into something positive if I can!

One of my game dev friends was frustrated that people were finding one of the strongest weapon types in their game very weak. So, they released a patch that said it buffed that weapon type. Then, all they did was double the size of the hit impact effect. The damage was unchanged.People loved it and were praising the buff left and right.

@jesu Oh, it wasn't increasing the area of effect. It was literally making the cosmetic visual effect that plays when the attack hits an enemy bigger. That's all.
