@feld Basically yes. 10s of services (arguably micro but not really) on 20-40 hosts. Kubernetes makes managing it all so much easier at scale.

I've been idly looking at ISPs after BT well and truly burned me with a huge mid-contract price rise this year.Vodafone have a downright crazy deal to get 910/105Mb for £36 a month. I already knew their customer service had a pretty questionable reputation but I've just learned that they don't have any #IPv6 support in 2023!There was some stuff about them getting around to it back in 2020 but since then *tumbleweed*. That is absolutely shameful for an ISP...

I have been convinced by @miah to try out NetBSD. So instead of going to bed at a sensible time, here we are... šŸ˜†

I've given this an hour or so of fiddling and I'm sorry but this experience is absolute garbage. I can't even get the rpi_inst image to finish partitioning successfully let alone install the OS. I can't find any docs to speak of for this install method either. :blobhaj_sadreach: It also has fun bugs like the one in the screenshot. I tried...

@penguin42 Yeah I fixed that by setting a specific size, but then when partitioning within that NetBSD partition I still could not get anything to work. 😢

That moment where you finish migrating something to a new server and realise that you actually have been running with no backups for the past two years. 😬 There's an S3 bucket there but nothing in it...maybe I meant to get to it later? I am a bad sysadmin for my personal stuff...On the upside the server I've migrated my app to does have working backups (that I fairly regularly test).

@tig True but I actually like S3-type storage for backups and things. It’s just so easy. You do have to be a special kind of muppet to leave them open these days. The defaults were *super* dodgy a few years ago though.

I just love it when my ZFS array chooses the time I'm on holiday to absolutely shit the bed. šŸ˜† Looking at the logs 3 of the.5 drives started erroring for a couple of minutes and then stopped. They are also all connected to the same cheap SATA controller.Maybe I'll hold off on splurging on new drives in the Best Buy sale while I'm in the US...

I bought a Dell H310 card including cables for Ā£25 on eBay that someone had conveniently already flashed to LSI ā€œIT-modeā€ firmware.Things are looking good for my ancient 2TB drives so far. Don’t buy cheap SATA controllers kids! These cards are around Ā£15 on eBay plus a few quid for MiniSAS to SATA cables…why didn’t I do this to start with!?#SelfHosting

I've gone down an absolute SAS-based rabbit hole. 😬The new Dell H310 card has given me some much needed expandability as well as the ability to use SAS drives/backplanes. I am looking to build a new ZFS array fairly soon, but I need somewhere to put the new drives. All the slots in my case are full so a disk shelf with hot swap capability is looking very attractive. I've found this on AliExpress but has anyone got any other cost effective options? #SelfHostinghttps://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005901398655.html

Alright I’ve bought this on AliExpress. There is just nothing else that fits the bill below about Ā£300. It was about Ā£70 all in. 🤷 #SelfHosting

@feld Not sure if you’re looking for recommendations here but I ended up setting my wife’s small business up on Zoho mail and have absolutely no complaints. It’s ludicrously cheap and does everything I could ever want it to do.

A fun side effect of moving from BT to Zen Internet is that my IP address now puts me in Warrington, Cheshire (I’m in Hampshire).I keep getting ads for stuff ā€œUp Northā€.

So as part of moving off BT to Zen, I’ve upgraded my connection from 300/50Mb to 500/70Mb. This unfortunately has highlighted that my little MikroTik router running OpenWrt was only just barely keeping up and now I can’t max out my new shiny line.I’m going to try some tweaks I’ve found in the #OpenWrt forums to eke out a bit of extra performance, but the temptation to go router shopping is ever present. šŸ˜†

The silly thing is that I did spend a couple of hundred quid on a very overpowered fanless x86 box from AliExpress a while ago and was running OpnSense in a VM on it, but I had stability issues so ultimately went back to #OpenWrt.I’m not sure I can bring myself to use that quad core, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD monster. It’s currently running a single web server VM though (which is also crashy every few weeks, I hope it’s Proxmox and not the hardware), so wasting it as a firewall isn’t any worse…

@penguin42 I did do that for a while with OpnSense and had issues related to the USB network adapter drivers. I do really like the neat little dedicated box approach.I’ll try and few more things to get OpenWrt to behave and then flash MikroTik’s RouterOS back on it if I have to I suppose.
