Next was an incredible panel on #GenerativeAI and #copyright at #SiliconFlatirons with @HarrySurden, Cynthia Arato, Oren Bracha, Andy Gass, Katherine Lee, and Viva Moffat. There's disagreement aplenty here, as well as rich legal and historical context for this timely discussion. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjlhrqK80f4 (5/8) #law #AI

Next was an important discussion with Laura Boudreau and Ada González-Torres on detecting harassment on the Business Scholarship Podcast. The survey methods introduced here are innovate and their results also demonstrate that harassment and other interpersonal workplace misconduct is likely severely underreported. Highly recommend https://podcasts.google.com/u/1/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9waW5lY2FzdC5jb20vZmVlZC9idXNpbmVzcy1zY2hvbGFyc2hpcC1wb2RjYXN0/episode/aHR0cHM6Ly9waW5lY2FzdC5jb20vZ3VpZC9mNGQzZWZjOS02NWI1LTQzNzgtOWQ3Yi1jYTA2ODI3ODI0NWM?sa=X&ved=0CAUQkfYCahcKEwjY0OPPxvSBAxUAAAAAHQAAAAAQLA (7/8)

It was pretty rainy today (this great Halloween decoration pic is from late last week), but while I was inside I was able to listen to some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist! (1/7)

Next was a fantastic talk by David G. Stork on algorithmically analyzing art at UCL. Stork shows how computational methods can shed new light on long standing questions in art analysis as well as map changes in art styles and components over time. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrXaKig679c (3/7) #art #AI

Next was an amazing talk by @Wolven on bullshit engines at Sonoma State University. Williams rigorously interrogates large multi-modal models and convincingly argues that as currently constructed they are likely to perpetuate bias, stereotypes, and other BS. Next was a nearly great symposium on economic mobility at the National Bureau of Economic Research. I particularly liked Raj Chetty's paper on growing class gaps and shrinking race gaps in mobility, but the last paper, essentially encouraging eugenics, was beyond the pale - it's possibly the most unethical paper I've ever seen presented in my life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YftI_u9BRa0 (6/7) #economics

Last was an excellent conference on new horizons in generative AI at Stanford HAI. The standouts for me were the talks by @erikbryn (👋) on the Turing trap and Ashia Wilson on how algorithms allocate opportunity https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlSkLc38hL4 (7/7) #AI #GenerativeAI

@Wolven Another piece I have coming up with an economic historian is about the issues with hagiography, and we explicitly point out problems with Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, and Adam Smith. I figure that will get a pretty heroic amount of hate mail 😅

Next was an excellent talk by Daniela Witten on double dipping in statistics at the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics. Witten points to double dipping, rather than the p-value itself, as one of the causes of the replication crisis in the sciences (IMO it's incentives, but this matters too) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiv--XjPl9M (3/8) #statistics #science

Last was a fantastic talk by Dan Awrey on deconstructing derivatives at Oxford. Awrey's deep dive on the relationship between Goldman Sachs and AIG prior and during the 2008 financial crisis and the legal mechanisms and incentives at play was fascinating and extremely clarifying.
