@normandc No matter how much RAM or CPU you throw at Nextcloud, it’ll still be slow. Maybe not that slow, but it’s not very snappy software.

Nice it looks like Jellyfin is finally officially on iOS and Roku(not sure when it happened, but noticed today). Looks like I can finally kick Plex to the curb. Of course this comes at a time I'm looking to dump Roku too, and my Roku only reinforced that feeling when I turned it on and it has changed my background to whatever they're advertising at the moment.

@jordan31 It seems to "accidentally" keep turning it self on after updates and such.

@jordan31 Pi Zeros are so cheap I have a bad habit of buy them for projects, abandoning the project, then think up another project, but forgetting I already have the Pi Zero. I think I've got at least 3 already and only one of them is being sort of used.

Jellyfin has been working great so far, so I'm going ahead with full Plex removal. Feels good.

@jordan31 I'd probably have even more Pi Zeros if I could find them in stock with decent shipping more often.

Due to moving limbo, a RaspberryPi 4 I picked up to be an emulation box is now my desktop computer. It's still sluggish, but far more usable than my previous attempts as raspberry pi desktop usage.

@jordan31 Looks like I've gotten them from Adafruit and Sparkfun, though they're never the only thing I buy, so that does temper the shipping cost to entire bill ratio quite a bit.

@jordan31 I probably still wouldn't recommend buying a pi4 for desktop use specifically, but if it's all you've got, it'll work in a pinch.

Sometimes I wonder if I using Jekyll has raised to usability barrier(i.e. needing access to a real computer with git) just enough so that it's the reason I don't blog much. But then I remember I didn't blog any more regularly when I had Wordpress or Blogger blogs with the app right on my phone. 🤷

I find my position in privacy as payment for services shifting regularly. Don't get me wrong, some sketchy app or website that wants to follow me around for the ad dollars is right out, but if Amazon of Google wants to make my life a bit easier and just shave off some of the rough edges, I might be willing to talk about a trade.

Got my PinePhone back out again.PostmarketOS seems a bit better than the last time I tried it, but far from daily driver territory. I'm hoping that ultimately the sluggishness ends up being a lack of software optimization rather than shortcomings in the hardware, because I'd really like this thing to eventually be usable day to day. In the mean time, I think I'm going to try out some other OSes for this phone and see how they all work out.

First five minute impression is that Mobian feels a little more complete out of the box. Probably still not daily driver material just yet, but still nicer none the less. Probably helps that Debian based distros are my Linux comfort food in general.

So Commander Keen is one of the "officially blessed" Proton titles in Steam(i.e. you don't have to enable Proton for all to run it). So it's using Proton/Wine to run DOSBox which in turn runs the game. Doesn't seem terribly efficient, and indeed the Proton version runs kind of choppily, but the games run fine when I run them with a native copy of DOSBox.

I think I'm about ready to give up on ZFS on Debian and go back to an md raid. It completely breaks every time there's an update requiring a bunch of work I don't care to do. I don't even have anything particularly special going on with my ZFS partition. It about as standard as you can get.

Think I'm going to give up on my noisy desktop for a while and go full laptop(with a USB-C dock of course). It's got less RAM, but it's manageable, the integrated Radeon graphics are nearly as good as my old desktop discreet card and more than enough for my light gaming, and finally the 4700U Ryzen clobbers my old Haswell i7 every time I put them head to head. WIth the added bonus of near silence and all my stuff being with me at the desk or on the go(when I can go again, maybe in 2021).

I think I'm going to have to finally dump Ubuntu, 20.10 is just way too buggy. Don't know where I'll go. I don't like Red Hat-like distros, so Fedora is out. I'd like to stay in Debian-like land, but real Debian won't support my fairly new laptop without lots of work and other Debian-like is generally Ubuntu based, so I don't know if I can trust it. Maybe Manjaro? I don't dislike Arch-like as much as Red Hat-like at least.

Don't work on old computers when you can't sleep. You might put an ISA hard drive controller in backwards in your grogginess. Of course the the component that popped is the only surface mount thing on the whole board. Off to eBay I go, I guess.

@normandc @FreeCAD I really sit down and actually learn FreeCAD one day so I can design my own 3D prints. Right now I can sort of mangle existing designs to be slightly closer to what I want.
