@matthannon the offline identification really is a game changer. I've learnt to identify more birds more securely in the last two months than I managed in my entire life beforehand - even using bird net. It's the real-time "listen, guess, compare, adjust" loop which really promotes listening for identifiable features which are memorable!

I'm beginning to think that #steampunk might actually be a pre-echo of a possible future. The #internet is useful, but it's become utterly boring. Media is utterly boring. Building things, experiencing things, enhanced by technology... that's more my cup of tea - and not in the fake American TV show manner.

@tante word of warning: by associating a generic X - which many people can agree on and work towards - with your specific set of political and cultural values, you turn it into X.63bdj7. You split. You divide. You paralyse. People who otherwise have different viewpoints and are made to communicate because of X, no longer seek consensus. This is true in so many fields, particularly climate change. It's the wrong way.

@rms I don't know why I'm bothering, but arguments like that are completely irrelevant to the anti-immigration crowd: whether socialist or capitalist or any other ideology. It's actually MORE frightening to them. First comes denigration, but when immigrants start to do well, that's when fear kicks in. "The great replacement" theories. In reality, governments ARE promoting immigration to compensate for demographic aging, which IS a consequence of progressive attitudes towards women.

The USA was an experiment, to be something better than the nation states which had gone before it - with their monarchies, their lack of representation or protection for minorities, their constant pogroms. @monarchist ... And yes... in that sense diversity has failed. The USA is the most diverse nation on earth. In the blink of an eye the downtrodden masses from around the world descended on it (promptly wiping out the original inhabitants of course) and ... have now recreated the conditions of their original enslavement, thinking that they're now the ones wearing the (jack) boots.
