@drdrang I don’t think that analogy works very well. macOS is still UNIX and MacPorts still works. (Some people HomeBrew or even pkgsrc.) Apple doesn’t distribute gplv3 bits and some stuff moved to dev tools. Safari/WebKit had some legitimate disagreements with Google on various things. I’m not sure it was entirely a strategy tax.

@duanegran @lisamelton That’s true only if you take the arguments seriously as good faith. In reality the “judicial reasoning” is post-hoc justification of the desired outcome. Relatedly, “originalism” is a doctrine whereby a judge scours arbitrarily old documents and useful snippets of text and out of context to find a justification of a desired outcome.

For example, Justice Scalia in Heller declared that the 2nd amendment text “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” implied an individual right to own guns. It is what we now call the National Guard which is a volunteer army mustered by each state. The point was that States were free to maintain a volunteer force so that the Federal Government did not have the only standing army. @mwt @mbonsma I had a driver HIT ME in a crosswalk when I had the “white man” crossing light last week in Washington, DC. And the yell at me for being in his way and drove off before I could make my way to the other sidewalk and call 911. Police took an hour to arrive and although I had a photograph of the license plate, claimed they could not track down the driver to do anything.

@benjaminwittes small items that are not bagged are not guaranteed to be collected. Sometimes the collectors pull the bags out of the bins manually. Even if they do the machine that dumps the bin, poop bags have a tendancy to stick to the bin. In either case the owner of the bin has to fetch and rebag the now festering and fermented shit. Even if you own a dog this is trying. It’s not cool to put your refuse in other people’s bin.

@pluralistic I used to use Trilian and Pidgin. I used Messages with Jabber/XMPP before it was killed on all sides. Imagine if one client could manage iMessage, WhatsApp, Slack, and Google Voice SMS. That would really remove a lot of annoyance from my life.

@pluralistic beeper mini didn’t last long. Apple has pulled the plug on them. @ZachWeinersmith @lisamelton Holy crap the Iliad is full of rape and the most graphic violence like stabbing people through the eye or neck with a spear, beheading your captives, and disemboweling men with all of the characters being completely terrible. Achilles spends most of the epic in a sulk because Agamemnon took the woman he took to rape for himself to rape. The only redeeming moments are Hector playing with his baby and the genuine affection between Achilles and Patroclus.
