@mjg59 a few weeks ago I asked it to generate me a list of synonyms precisely for naming a variable. It went into an infinite loop for about 5 to 10 minutes then crashed itself.

@mjg59 @SteveSyfuhs @foone it kinda is what userspace is doing though to e.g., prevent against certain classes of escapes that rely on the kernel resolving .. and symlinks. It can be done race free it's just rather involved to do correctly; at least without openat2().

"Linux Kernel Contribution Maturity Model" has finally made it into the kernel. Members of the Technical Advisory Board (TAB) of the Linux Foundation including @gregkh, @kees, @corbet, myself and others have been working together on this!It will hopefully provide guidance for companies in supporting open source developers and maintainers effectively!https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=10a29eb658b3039eccfa6f249da079194f535a9a#linux #kernel #opensource

We just opened registration for #LinuxPlumbers 2023https://lpc.events/blog/current/index.php/2023/06/16/registration-for-lpc-2023-is-open/We're very excited about this! Go register early as we usually sell out very fast!#linux #kernel

Sent out the first version of converting btrfs to the new mount apihttps://lore.kernel.org/linux-btrfs/20230626-fs-btrfs-mount-api-v1-0-045e9735a00b@kernel.orgI'm tired but wanted to get out a first draft of this. That should be one of the last major filesystems to not support the new mount api.#linux #kernel #btrfs

As of yesterday, the #LXD project is no longer part of the Linux Containers project but can now instead be found directly under Canonical's control. Please read our official statement on:https://linuxcontainers.org/lxdI personally consider Canonical's move to be a hostile act and as far as I'm concerned the decision was unilateral. It may be legally sound but it leaves a very bad taste behind.I've been involved with this project independent of what company I moved to. To see this happening is sad.

LXD is a registered trademark of Canonical so while it would have been possible to maybe fork it, it at least wouldn't have kept its name. See https://ubuntu.com/legal/trademarksHowever, Canonical has no control of LXC, LXCFS, or https://github.com/lxcThese projects way predate Canonical.

Apparently I'm not a maintainer of #LXD anymore and neither is @stgraber. So it seems from now on it's Canonical employees only.I'd like to point out that before Canonical moved LXD into github.com/canonical/lxd maintainership was completely independent of the company. If you went to work somewhere else you still were a maintainer. As it should be with any well-functioning OSS project.

@mjg59 is that resignation still public? In light of how canonical changed over the years it'd be interesting to compare whether the problems aren't in a way still the same.

Yes, #systemd switching everything over to #pidfds.* Most of the internal process tracking is being changed to use PIDFDs instead of PIDs when the kernel supports it, to improve robustness and reliability.https://github.com/systemd/systemd/blob/main/NEWS

I have a hard time understanding why Red Hat patented the concept behind the idmapped mount work I did? I mean just overall why even do this and also why hasn't anyone ever talked to us about this? I don't care about patents but this is really weird given that this patent is given to a single person but none of the actual people involved in this are even mentioned. Then again, I know nothing about patents. 🤷https://patents.justia.com/patent/11797357#linux #kernel

@kernellogger That VFS patch has never been on any mailing list and has never been seen by Al, Jan, or myself...

Honestly, I'm prepared to start a kickstarter for whatever amount of money it takes for someone to port Linux man-pages from groff to markdown.@cyphar is doing the important work as usualhttps://lore.kernel.org/20250807-new-mount-api-v2-0-558a27b8068c@cyphar.combut groff must be one of the original sins. Like, Moses came down from the mountain and was like "don't do groff" but accidently dropped the first stone table or something. Like seriously, everytime I have to look at patches I die a little inside.

@pid_eins Ah, interesting this goes back a couple of years where I pitched that idea. Interesting to see it come to fruition.
