@joel I self-host a lot of these too. There are probably things you can do to make this more useful. For example, use tailscale with a low-cost VPS to expose your services without opening ports. Gitea allows you to sync repos to GitHub or Gitlab, so you can use it as your main interface but use GitHub/Lab as a backup/public interface. I recently scaled back on what I exposed to the internet, but I still run a lot of these services.

@joel @ninja I don't find self-hosting that tedious. You just have to keep on top of anything you have exposed. Compared to letting someone else do it, sure, but that assumes there is no "cost" to letting someone else do it. We all know there is. Self-hosting got a lot easier for me once I embraced Docker (though I am looking at Podman).

@ru It's the closest I'll ever come to the feeling of having rich parents who cut me off. Everything was easy, now it's not, but it's much more personally rewarding.
