If people are using ChatGPT as a replacement for search engines, my outlook on human survival and our ability to crawl out of this age of misinformation has taken a nosedive.

Asking ChatGPT to explain something you know should cure any illusions you have about it being a usable source for information.

I've been playing around with ChatGPT, trying to figure out if it can write some simple GTK4 code. It instead wrote invalid GTK3 code. I tried to hint that it made a large mistake, and it kept writing the same program again and again. Finally I dropped a hint that got it to recognize that its code was invalid GTK4, so it made up a brand new function to replace the GTK3 functions it was using :D

I think the main thing holding back GNOME mobile (for my usage) is a lack of reliable native apps for sites like YouTube, Reddit, Discord, or even federated services like Mastodon. It's unlikely we'll ever see official clients for these services, so it falls on dedicated users to create applications for them. Too bad most of the proprietary services actively kill third-party applications.

Using a third-party Discord app could get your account banned, and third-party YouTube apps break every few weeks. Reddit is the only one of these sites that has an open API.

This is another reason why I love the fediverse - anyone can make their own clients. No need to purchase API keys, no arbitrary restrictions on what you can and can't make with the APIs. Want to make your own app for a platform only you use? Go ahead!

I wonder what makes getting a working camera on these phone distros so challenging. 90% of phones "supported" by e.g. postmarketOS don't have a working camera.

This is a legitimate question btw - not trying to put anyone down, I genuinely want to know the challenges here

I want to add even more devices to this collection, but some would be prohibitively expensive.

While I'm really happy that so many apps are coming out using libadwaita, I'm also quite surprised at some of the apps that have made the choice to use it over plain GTK4. Apps that I wouldn't have considered to be GNOME-adjacent in the GTK3 days.

@thelinuxEXP the OnePlus 6T on postmarketOS seems to be the best option. That's what's running on the device to the far left. The 6T is the only one with hardware performant enough to use day-to-day (by my impression, I haven't daily driven any of these). The others have performance issues. The base PinePhone is so slow that it's nearly unusable. The PinePhone Pro is faster, but throw something like a web browser at it, and it will choke after a few pages (or one page, depending on what it is). The Pro also has some pretty bad audio crackling issues (and base just has bad audio), while audio works perfectly on the 6T.

Some last minute changes in GNOME Weather landed from Cleo Menezes Jr. and Oscar Pritchard, giving the header a flat look and making the temperature graph a smooth curve.

Okay, people have been joking about it, but it's now official: Musk pressured Twitter engineers into pushing him to the top of everyone's feeds.https://www.platformer.news/p/yes-elon-musk-created-a-special-system

If you could use any programming language to write a GNOME app, that isn't already supported by existing bindings, what would you use?

At this point I feel like a mac mini running a Linux VM would be the best option, but I want to know how other options stack up.

For those hosting or using smaller instances, what relays do you use?
