Which Linux distro would you recommend to new (non-techie) Linux users? The received wisdom used to be Ubuntu, then it became Mint because it came with non-free codecs/drivers and the Cinnamon desktop by default.Nowadays (judging from podcasts) it seems to be Elementary, although I've not set aside time to try it yet for myself.

I have mixed feelings about people buying non-free software to support free software, but in case this is of interest to anyone that does #python things:https://www.jetbrains.com/pycharm/promo/support-django/

@addamschloe this would be why my veganism lasted five months.Christmas dinner was awful. It consisted of boiled vegetables without gravy and oven-cooked nut cutlets that sucked the spit out of my mouth because I was visiting family and had limited access to the cooker.I would go back to vegetarianism though, mostly because the world supports it better & I wouldn't spend half my life looking at ingredients lists!

Dear people who write bots: please respect the #nobot tag in people's bios. Also if your bot is auto-following people, it needs to explain *why* it wants access to follower-only toots! It would suck if most people felt forced to turn on follow approvals just because of unsolicited spam bot follows.

Here's the direct link to the findings from those documents:https://www.parliament.uk/documents/commons-committees/culture-media-and-sport/Note-by-Chair-and-selected-documents-ordered-from-Six4Three.pdfIt is really quite damning.* Facebook deliberately obscured from users what information they were collecting about them & how to opt out* Facebook used its monopoly to cripple competing applications and services* Facebook signed agreements to acquire data other app developers collected in exchange for some of its own* Companies could circumvent user permissions by signing an agreement with Facebook

You know how a few weeks back I mentioned how cool it was that Al Lowe was selling copies of the original source code for Leisure Suit Larry and other Sierra games?Well... Activision put a stop to that!https://www.pcgamer.com/activision-forced-al-lowe-to-cancel-his-leisure-suit-larry-source-code-auctions/#retrocomputing #retrogaming

It looks like there's some more scary news about Facebook.Apparently companies like Netflix, Spotify & various banks had read, write and delete access to people's private messages. Facebook claimed the oversight was because they didn't consider them "service providers" 🤦♂️Worse still, Yandex (a search engine with links to the Kremlin) had the same access, although they deny being aware of or ever using that access.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/18/technology/facebook-privacy.html#click=https://t.co/P0rPXhnKhF

In case you wanted to see the inside of an Apple Macintosh LC II...Unfortunately the 80MB SCSI hard drive doesn't want to work this morning. I can hear it try to power up, but then it stops and boot fails, leaving me with the well-known "where's my boot floppy?" icon.#retrocomputing
