You can draw a direct line between Alphabet losing $100 billion in market cap for over-promising on its AI efforts and its dismissing world-class researchers like @timnitGebru, @meg, and @alex who were pumping the brakes on this exact type of AI hype years ago.

Google literally had a more than two-year head start on issues of ethics, fairness, and trust in LLMs. If I was a $GOOGL stockholder, I’d have some pointed questions about leadership prioritizing the feelings of engineering managers over the entirely justified concerns about strategy and implementation raised by its expert researchers.

You have to go all the back to, say, February 2022 to find an analogous mania for a technology with fundamental technical gaps and massive social liabilities. And all those golden boys were bankrupt or indicted just 10 months later. The real winner of this AI race will be who can scale LLM training and content moderation by repackaging the most human labor at the lowest cost into an inoffensive simulation of a computer.

Usability in the Fediverse has a long way to go, but I will always appreciate how sharing a link to a Mastodon toot isn’t larded up with trackers. Just like viewing a toot doesn’t require dismissing half a dozen pop-ups about cookie notifications, newsletter signups, video ads, and pushing the mobile app.

NGL, the collective anxiety spirals #OnHere every time an alternative social media platform gets a modicum of traction is an exhausting experience. Mastodon and its philosophy, leadership, and design choices don’t need to be the Main Character. Post, Substack Notes, BlueSky, and others will come and go. Doesn’t mean we need weeks-long meltdowns and recriminations *every* time.

Apparently I’m not alone: the honeymoon period for #Threads is over. Fascinating example of politically-motivated content moderation on NextDoor.Local anti-homelessness ballot measure is endorsed by Boulder County GOP. I post a link about it—referencing the official GOP announcement—and predictable NextDoor conversation ensues. Post gets then gets reported by the pearl-clutching brigade and taken down for *misinformation* even though the link to the official announcement is in my post. 🤡
